great movie makes me ashamed to be chinese

how can a country a nation, a govt do this to their people?

I understand China felt that its over populated and didn't have the infrastructure to support the growth, so then you as a govt you need to educate people and let them know the situation and you can recommend change and advertise a new direction, there is no need for such heavy handed policies that resulted in millions of babies being killed and tossed down into wells, and left on the streets abandoned... just plain shameful.

on this particular topic, I hesitate to condemn china completely. before the economic reforms of deng xiaoping, china was a poor country. It would have been extremely difficult to imagine a "weibo" or an "alibaba" sprouting up back then. So, it was probably not uncommon for families, particularly rural farmers to make difficult decisions regarding families, in an area where sons are favored not just culturally, but also for their physical assistance with the manual labor.

I will say that China has made some strides to roll back the "one-child policy" and for many chinese, the standard of living has probably risen . There actually may be a good possibility that had these girls been born today, just a couple of decades later, they may not have been dropped off at an orphanage or given for adoption.
