the film sets up Caroline as the main character, but she isn't really at all, so what's the point of pretending she is?

I wouldn't go so far to say that she's a manic pixie dream girl, but her story and character seems to solely revolves around her affairs with Thurston and Mr. Anderson. We don't even really see her interact with her own father, even though we know he's at some point going to get cancer.(And why wasn't he at the hospital when she got in that car accident?)

I really enjoyed the moment where she gets angry at being described as ethereal and declares that she is the main character of her story, and that moment in combination with seeing the dead guy in the backyard is supposed to be a revelation for Carpline, but all it leads up to is her getting together with a different guy. The whole point was that she was not there to save Mr. Anderson, and yet at the end of the film Thurston says she saved him, and she seems fine with that.

The part where she rants about being ethereal was a brilliant moment of the film.

Like you said. The film tried to set her up as the main character and Caroline almost broke the fourth wall when she had that rant, she wanted to stop playing with Men's emotions and being part of THEIR story. Then here's Thurston, who really cared and loved her and so she choses him. Instead of him fighting for her, she takes a stance and fights for him.
