Disney's ethnic quota...

Indian guy and Sterling (whatever his character's name is) sister
African man and the grandmother
Oooh, "mixed" relationships.

And the BFF~ of course.

Ooh, go you Disney. Adding minor characters in interracial characters def makes up for it.

It's just funny because you know they did it on purpose. (Like on Hannah Montana, everyone is white, but they "make up for it" by having Jackson crush on ~many~ different types of girls, even brown ones!)

Yeah... Well... For one thing... I don't know of any Indians in mixed relationships. (Not saying it doesn't happen... but, I know a LOT of Indians, and none of them are married to non-Indians.) So that seemed kind of ...odd to me.

Black/White relationships... They're pretty common... but not with older people... so that seemed odd to me.

The best friends thing didn't even occur to me. That seemed totally natural. But then again, one of my best friends is black. So, of course, I'm not going to think it is strange.

But talking about the racial 'quota'... They might try to make up for it... but it's not exactly un-realistic. Ethnic groups tend to stay together and don't widely mix. It seems to be a rarity for there to be true diversity among a group of friends.

Whatever. I could care less. Disney has a princess in every color of the rainbow.

My best best friends consist of a black girl, a spainish girl(spain), an english girl,2 puerto rican girls, a chinese girl, a black and puerto rican girl an Indian girl and me( black west indian)

From my point of view Disney REALLY needs to mix it up a little bit more, and how come none of their main characters are ever black unless it's a "black" movie or show. The only one that broke the mold was Jett Jackson and that's over. All the new "ethnic" shows try to hard to be "hip & cool" with their over the top fake slang. Why can't the minorities speak like human beings? I miss old Disney sometimes. *sighs*

Could it have something to do with the fact that when they make the lead characters black (such as That's So Raven), it IS considered a "black" show? Disney is usually centered around families, and they obviously couldn't make the father from Hannah Montana or the brother from Wizards of Waverly Place black. There's nothing worse than people becoming PC about freaking TV shows. They aren't supposed to fill up a quota

I AM Indian and I KNOW a LOT of Indians, many of my friends and family have married non-Indians, had kids with them and even more have been in mixed relationships. Including myself.

It's not odd at all and I really don't understand why it should be.

I hate being sexy, But someone has to do it

me (indian/american)- my husband (Jewish/American)
my husband's brother and his wife (Indian)

i have several other Indian/American friends in "mixed" relationships as well

just because you don't know any, doesn't mean they don't exist

probably just means you haven't been out in the world yet.

just a thought.

I dunno if this is a "making up for" type of thing. I mean, the fact that not everyone was white, especially in LA, was one of the few realistic things in the movie.

reply

LA has way more "ethnic" people than that. Also I meant because Disney has very few DCOMS starring so called "ethnic" people. Wizards of Waverly Place and the Suite Life- but Brenda Song isn't the main character, the twins are.

A white person is an ethnic person, by the way.

And for me... it's like... who cares what color they are? If it is a good show, it is a good show.

But if you look at the 'scene' of LA that they were looking into... I would say there are a lot more whites than in the true LA. I mean, Hollywood is not really a true representation of anything, especially race.

I remember the Jet Jackson. Great show.

It's great that Disney uses people of different ethnicities, but I really don't think it matters. I only care about the story line, the show, and the character... not a skin color. But maybe that is just me. =/

I know white is an ethnic group, hence Spain and England :], those two are white.

And yeah for the most part I don't care as long as the show is good but at the same time there are little minority kids running around asking their parents how come they're brown and curly headed and not blonde and white like the kids on Disney Channel. I've seen too many kids with this complex to let Disney's lack of color go unnoticed. It's sad.

A white person is not an ethnic person. In general, white constitutes being rootless. Many with a set knowledge of their heritage, such as those within Italian or Greek diasporas, do not consider themselves white.

Ethnic, however, refers to non-white, aka coloured. It is derived from colonist practices of "othering" and refers to those seeming foreign/ not deemed with the privilege of being Caucasian.

See the dictionary.

eth·nic   [eth-nik]
–adjective

1. pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.

2. referring to the origin, classification, characteristics, etc., of such groups.

3.being a member of an ethnic group, esp. of a group that is a minority within a larger society: ethnic Chinese in San Francisco.

4.of, pertaining to, or characteristic of members of such a group.

5.belonging to or deriving from the cultural, racial, religious, or linguistic traditions of a people or country: ethnic dances.

6.
Obsolete. pagan; heathen.

Miley Cyrus is not ethnic. Her Texan culture is just that, a culture. Being Texan is not an ethnicity. Demi Lovato's character Sunny is only described as being from some boring place in the US. Once again, not a reference to her ethnicity.

Regardless, in the sense that I was referring to and that most refer to are those not within the hegemonic norm. Aka, minorities.

Comprendez? ;)

And the problem is?......
if you have something to say, then say it, there's no point subtly beating round the bush

what confuses me is how disney makes the family, Jessica didnt fully look american as her sister did, and her father and mother looked more american. I kinda thought Jessica was adopted out of all of them....

my brother (who is white) married a girl who's parents are from India. They have a beautiful 14-month-old daughter together.

See? It doesn't matter if you're white, black, brown, yellow or pink w/ white polka-dots. We can all have relationships with different people. I'm tired and rambling.

Shutting up now.
