Why not cut the race scenes + keep the show?

I was appalled when I read that 3 horses have died to make this show, which I was trying to get into although it's nowhere near as good as Boardwalk Empire, imo. In this day & age of technology I see no reason to risk the lives of these beautiful creatures - why can't they use racing footage that already exists or digitally create race pieces on thier computers? The show focused on the characters surrounding the horses anyway, so even if they eliminated the entire race scenes and instead just gave us reaction shots of key characters watching the race, that'd be alright with me...

I don't know much about how other race horse films were made, like Sea Biscuit, and whether or which shots were CGI, but there were 14 horses who played Joey in War Horse (including one animatronic horse) and no one noticed any differences that I've ever heard expressed.

And Seabiscuit was bloody boring.

There is NO WAY a CGI horse done, even by ILM, would look as beautiful as those scenes looked in this series. There is no comparison between real life photography and a fancy computer cheat crutch used by some a-hole studio. Its the emperors new clothes of entertainment. It was a crown jewel of the show and the removal of them would change the show so much, so that, it would seem like a completely different show.
