I really like Deadwood, and I know that David Milch, the creator of Deadwood, was involved in the creation of this show. However, I have a passionate antipathy towards horse-racing. The presence of actors like Hoffman and Richard Kind make this show more desirable. Do you think that someone who loathes horse-racing will find this show interesting?

I guess it depends on why you loath horse-racing.
I didn't care at all about horse racing before watching this show. I ended up loving it for the characters, and the passion and love of the creators for the sport and animals became obvious over the course of the series and sort of infected me.
Milch was much more then simply involved with the creation of the show, this was his magnum opus. He wanted to do a show on this subject matter since he began doing television. If you loved the dialogue in Deadwood, Milch speaks through his characters in much the same way on this show.
Granted, you got to stick it out for a couple of episodes as it doesn't pull any punches and throws you right into the track atmosphere, so for a newbie to the sport it will probably require a rewatch or two to grasp the finer nuances of what is playing out on screen. The payoff is definitely worth the effort, though.

Thanks for the advice Nuncle. The local DVD outlet is selling this for AU$19, and I've been mulling over it for a while. I will buy it quite soon. :)
