How did this show not survive?

I never heard ot it, not having an HBO subscription. Just ran across it on-line. Wow -what a cast of stars! How did this show not survive? It must've had terrible writing or was in an awful time slot? Pity.

Horses injuring themselves on set and PETA spreading bullsh!t about animal abuse was bringing too much negative attention to HBO so they pulled the plug in the middle of filming the 2nd episode of season 2.

I just read an interview with Nick Nolte that suggests that it wasn't really the PETA thing it was that things were so bad between Milch and Michael Mann that HBO just had enough and pulled the pin. If they had more confidence that the people running the show were responsible to the budget they wouldn't have bowed to PETA
