Unpopular opinion- for the last time!

One of my favorite threads to read on this board is the occasional Unpopular Opinion thread. I think this message board handles this topic very well and is usually respectful of each opinion.

So, I'd like to start a new Unpopular Opinion thread (possibly the last one before the boards are gone?). I'll kick it off:

My unpopular opinion is: I don't think Spencer is the best Liar or best friend to the other Liars that many people think she is. Many like to rip on Emily for always falling for a new person...but Spencer has had her fair share of new love interests too. Also, we say that Aria is always about Ezra, Ezra, Ezra first... but Spencer put Toby before the girls when she kept his secret about being on the A team. And Hanna is definitely impulsive- often to her own detriment... but Spencer has been known to jump on her own hunches as well, like her taking off into the woods on her own during the wedding dress fashion show. Not saying I dislike Spencer, but I also don't think she is better than the other girls. She makes mistakes too.

Ok, your turn!

You don't have to attend every argument you are invited to.

1: I love Season 4.
2: I'm fine with CeCe being Big A.
3: I love 4x12 and 4x24.
4: I think 6x01 is overrated.

reply

1. That we should do another unpopular opinion thread just kidding.
2. I ship Ezra with chickpeas. It can't be a coincidence that we've only seen him in shorts when he was riding a bike and again when he was putting the chickpeas back in the cabinet.
3. I liked Alison with Lorenzo.
4. Mona should've died.
5. I ship Caleb with death.
6. Spencer should end up with Wren or Andrew(the couple we never got who had the bright idea to pair him with Aria?)
7. I like Spencer's bangs. They just don't make an effort style them.

I like Ali's bangs from the finale pic! I thought they really suited her and was surprised so many didn't care for them.

1. I ship Hanna with the Travis fella. He was good for her.
2. Instead of a 7th season I think the writers should have ended the 6th season with the Liars going to university and then have a TV movie with them returning to Rosewood 5 years later.
3. I think Alison should die. Perhaps trying to help/save the Liars but at first after dying she would look guilty as hell. It would close her arc.
4. I think Ezra should have left in the 1st or 2nd season and Aria should have dated age appropriate guys. Her coming to terms with the whole "dating an older guy" would have been preferable to. It messes you up and young girls need to know that instead of fantasizing about dating older guys.
5. I liked detective Holbrook. Not in the way that I think he was a nice guy, but he made a nice, slimy villain.

reply

1. I prefer season 4 over season 3.
2. 6A is better than 5A.
3. I appreciate Cece's appearance pre-A reveal.
4. Season 7A is better than seasons 5-6.
5. Hanna should've have stayed with Travis after Caleb left.
6. I shipped Spaleb till 6x20.
7. Toby should've died in season 3, Ezra should've died in season 4, Mona should've died in season 5, and Hanna should've died in season 7.
8. I prefer Spencer's drug addiction storyline in 4B over her downward spiral storyline in 3B.
9. I prefer 2x25 and 4x24 over 5x25.
10. Seasons 1-4 Ali was my favorite liar. She's now behind Mona, Spencer, and Aria and ahead of Hanna and Emily.

reply

I really, really can't stand Emison.

Alison has turned into one of my least favorite characters.

I liked Spaleb through 6b and still prefer them to Haleb (although he turned into such a raging douche that I don't really want him with anyone at this point).

I don't think 7a was as great as a lot of people seem to.

Hanna should have died in 7x01.

I thought 4x24 was a let down, and I actually like 3x24 a lot.

reply

Probably the biggest unpopular opinion in this fandom (though not on this board) is that I love Paige.

I hate Emison.

Aria is not the worst of the 4. Hanna is the worst. Yeah yeah at least Hanna tries to get things done blah blah blah but she also tends to make things ten times worse all the while copping an attitude about it. So yeah, no to team Hanna.

Starting in season 3, Toby became just as bad as Ezra if not worse in some ways. They tried to fix it come 6B/7A but it was too little, too late.

Before they made Caleb an asshat, I SO shipped Spaleb.

Speaking of Caleb he was way cuter when he was a shaggy drifter. I miss his long hair.

I think all 4 of the PLL should have told Alison to pound sand instead of coming back to Rosewood for her and getting all tangled up in another one of her messes.

Love Mona but they should have killed her off for real.

CeCe as A was not a terrible choice. It was all the reasons and stupid backstory that made it terrible.

I like Jason okay and he's one of the more sympathetic characters on this show but I do think he's over-rated and I don't really get the Jaria shipping.

The First Secret is a boring episode.

reply

I agree with a lot of these. I haven't seen The First Secret and It's a dark ride in years so I'm not sure if my opinion changed. I also have to keep in mind that I simply liked the characters used in the season 2 halloween episode more so I"ve never actually judged based on the quality of the episode. Extra yes to your Caleb comments, Hanna being the worst, shipping Spaleb, and that Cece could've been A if it was done better. Paige is top 3 for me along with Ian(my favorite villain) and Spencer.

I will be honest and say that my main beef with The First Secret is that it's an episode centered entirely around Alison and I just don't like her enough to care. I didn't need an hour of "Alison is a terrible person" because we already knew that. Other than that it was just meh. I didn't think the whole "murder house" thing was that compelling, I don't care about Emily and Ben (because no one does), and so on. Oddly enough my favorite scenes in the episode were Aria's. Lucy actually gets to act and didn't have to be glued to Ian the whole time (although they of course shoved in an Ezra appearance). Her telling Byron she can't forgive him is an amazing scene.

In hindsight Dark Ride gets screwed over just like all the episodes post CeCe reveal but if you watch each as a standalone episode, Dark Ride is just better.

EDITED TO ADD: I feel the The First Secret was the first real instance of ignoring continuity for fan service. The Ezra appearance, Toby and Emily being friends in that episode even though they definitely weren't friends pre-season 1, and Ashley turning out to know Wilden before Hanna got arrested which also seems like BS. They just wanted to connect a bunch of dots that didn't NEED to be connected, seemingly to fill screen time or more likely give Marlene an ego trip because she loves unnecessary call backs.

Oh yeah they were determined to do the "oops we met before" storyline.

I love Paige too!!

I love Alison and she will always be my favorite liar! Very unpopular opinion.

reply

Mine probably aren't unpopular for this board lol

1) all of the main couples should've been done a long time ago. Ezria like season 2, Haleb season 5, Spoby season 3.

2) I love Spencer's bangs and I think she's the prettiest pll

3) I like Jake and Aria, and Hanna and Travis

I have more but am at work and can't think lol
