I think Hurt was the weak link here. His 'laconic' style went a little too far. Absolutely no passion in his performance toward his wife, family or girlfriend.

I agree. Really, really poorly made film. I'm a huge fan of William Hurt too - his English accent was atrocious.
I also don't understand why it was ok for them to cheat on each other? Like it's no big deal? Does that mean it's OK for me to do that when I'm in my 60s?!!
But yah, really, really boring....!
