WORST SPANISH MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN YEARS

God, i wish i haven't wasted my time with this. I can't lie i had high hopes for this film, since being directed by the often great Alex de la Iglesia. After the 10 first minutes i was already dissapointed.

It's the movie, it's pretentious beyond limits. The cheap use of the civil war metaphor is already been used too many times (in far better films like Cria Cuervos y El Espiritu de la Colmena). The acting is plain bad, EVEN if it was the point of the movie there's a thin line between the grotesque/grand guinol and the PLAIN BAD PERFORMANCES. The two leads, the sad clown and the whore are PAINFUL to watch. Nobody can relate to such tragic and boring characters. Too bad for the other actor, who comes from Gordos and Volver fame, to be paired with such a bad cast.

..and what about the plot? or the lack of, i must say. The story starts too soon and ends too early. It draws too much and in the end, there wasn't anything worthy to say. I

The dissapointing comes from the director itself. We see references/homages/ripoffs from Tarantino to Jodorowsky, but itself lacks an autor signature. Alex de la Iglesia was such a promise back time, with really good films like Accion Mutante and La Comunidad, but for every good film he directed such crappy films like Perdita Durango or The Oxford Murders.

Stay away from this film.

I have to agree - this is one of the worst films I've ever seen and this is coming from an Iglesia fan. It's just so grotesque and numbing at the same time. There is no soul to this film. Unlike you, I loved Perdita Durango and feel it's a very underrated Iglesia film. But this... Sweet Jesus...

Maybe i overlooked Perdita Durango. I'll watch again.

reply

Now that is funny 'cause I was not an Iglesia fan and i loved this one.
I just had to watch the trailer to know I'd love this one. For some reason (and I'm not spanish) the Spanish Civil War, Franco but actually Spanish history in general always attracted me. Then, the music, the clown, the darkness, the violence, the tragedy, the sadness and the music...very fellini indeed and, I just felt I'd love it. And I did.
I didn't find it pretentious at all. I thought de la Iglesia cared way more about his characters than about the "metaphor" and the movie felt "true" to me rather than "award-focused"...and I had no problem with the acting either so...takes all kind I guess. :)

I wouldn't recommend people to go see this film (or to stay away from it, now THAT would be pretentious to think I can know what they want or need) but I think the trailer is pretty honest so I'd just suggest them to watch it and see if it makes them wanna go see the movie or not.

Lem! Lem, I'm sorry! But I had to, right?!

Silly review. Brilliant film.

reply

If you call this 'brilliant' i don't need to argue with you.

reply

Why would you need to argue? Some like, some do not. Quite simple.

reply

You really shouldn't. It would only embarrass you further. This movie IS brilliant, but you have to actually have a brain to appreciate it. Unfortunately for you they did not include that disclaimer in the opening credits.

You obviously missed the whole political subtext of the movie. Didn't you find it a tad bit odd that a "mindless" action flick would be so intertwined with actual historic events? Then again, you probably know nothing about Spanish history. Please retreat to your cave and go play Modern Warfare 3.

reply

Really stupid post. Just because someone doesn't appreciate a film or piece of music that you like doesn't mean he or she isn't intelligent. You're the one coming across as an idiot, not the OP.

reply

Well, at least you're right about something!

reply

No need for caps!

Marge: This is terrible! How will the kids get home?
Homer: I dunno. Internet?

reply

So, just because other movies used the spanish civil war as background this movie can't? How exactly is the movie "pretentious"? No idea where you saw a Tarantino reference. If you think this is the "worst" movie spain has produced in years you clearly don't watch many movies from that country.

Can't agree. Try to watch it.
It scores 10/10 for "weird", but at least it is different, and worth watching. Though it may make you wonder at times what on earth is going on.

reply

A complete embarrassing mess , yep.

I loved the frenzied pace.

And if you think this movie was just about "clowns being creepy" then you aren't even trying to watch the movie objectively.

The movie was bizarre, over-the-top, humorous, shocking and emotionally resonant at times.

I will agree it lacked a singular focus. But I'm not gonna fault the filmmakers because that was clearly the intent.

I will agree with the CGI. It was the only major qualm I had with the movie. Other than that I found the movie to be incredibly striking visually.

7/10 from me.
