Just a pointless absurd pile of crap !
I know fellow scriptwriters, lets do a film that makes no sense with no conclusion, it's bound to go over well with viewers that like shitty little dumb films like this !!!

(***SPOILERS***) The mysterious set-up is good for about the first 35-40 minutes, but then you know people are just going to start disappearing one-by-one and you can usually predict when that's going to happen, e.g. when the young guy kneels down behind the bar. Another flaw is that some of the dramatics feel forced and awkward, like the girl suddenly morphing into a preacher. Comparable movies like "Night of the Living Dead," "The Mist," "Phantoms" and "Donner Pass" didn't have this problem because they had superior writers/filmmakers.
I know what you mean about the movie being pointless, but it might help to see it as a microcosm of death in our lives: People & creatures all around us seem to die off in the blink of an eye until one day it's our turn.
