What really happened

anyone knows why and what happened?
Some alien stuff or?

Overall a decent movie, well worth a watch

reply

I also wonder what happened, the guys in black at the end seemed to know what has happened, but if they did, why even go in there? But yeah i guess some government stuff or aliens. Anyway I really thought it was creepy!

reply

Exactly! Why didn't they seal the place off?

reply

It was a good film for a Friday night, girls were very pretty. What do you want for Netflix. 3 out of 5 stars.

reply

We really have nothing to go by, but at least we know (1) it's a local event, at least in and around the cabin, (2) it started within a day or two of the protagonists' arrival, (3) and the US government probably knows something is happening.

It probably isn't aliens since they usually are concerned with animal life (except to supposedly dissect cattle). It probably isn't the Rapture since it would be happening everywhere and all at once, so I would guess it's some sort of energy vortex/time-space phenomenon.

Now, only animals were affected -- the house, the earth, the trees, etc., weren't -- so it would have to be something specific to certain carbon-based lifeforms.

It's possible that the filmmakers themselves really didn't know what was behind the happenings in the film, which means they can just leave it up to our imaginations.

reply

Yeah love the idea of space and time and vortexes...reminds of another movue i need to rewatch "The Corridor", thats the one with the cabin and woods aswell right?

reply

A few days ago, I had watched the movie 'Coherence' (watched it twice) which was about a multiverse event. So this movie made me think about that.

This seemed more like a writers movie. The guy who takes his own life says he wants something of himself left behind and even that's taken. The guy who steals the car is taken but not the girl even though she was alone after he was taken (saving her for a dramatic exit later). The mass event at the end seemed just for ending shock value.

reply

I'm not certain that the law enforcement people disappeared--it may just be that the last survivor of the event left this dimension and it only seemed that they were all gone--when instead, she was on the way out.

reply

I like your opinion, tellstar,.Your take on the ending makes a lot of sense. If only in theory because the viewer is left to decide what is happening.

reply

That's what I was thinking too.

reply

Yea i figured SHE disappeared and we are viewing her disappearance from her POV.

reply

no they were all zapped to warehouse 13.

reply

Maaaaaaaybe it was supposed to be the rapture as the first girl to go was catholic and ameila disappeared after praying .

reply

Was surprised noone actually mentioned the rapture; the religious girl thought it might be god punishing them, but didn't consider it might be some kind of divine salvation.

reply

...started within a day or two of the[ir] arrival

I suspect would be within the time from when they made the 'reservations'?

...the Rapture...would be happening...all at once...

The reasoning here is not based on logic or known facts. No one knows how, when, where, who, or what occurs with the Rapture.

I believe the filmmakers planned it the way it turned out, to begin discussions!

Peace out

This movie wasnt bad...kind of reminded me of a Stephan King Book or his movie the Langoliers...

reply

It was exactly like every Stephen King book turned tv movie...you're left saying what the hell happened and I will never get back the 1 hour 32 minutes I just lost. Seriously, has any Stephen King movie EVER explained a thing??? I've wasted 2 seasons of Under the Dome already...

reply

Number one, I can't think of a single Stephen King Movie where the events weren't explained or at least hinted too, Number two "Under the Dome" is very VERY loosley based on the book. The only premise they've really stuck to is that there is a giant dome over the town, but if it will make you feel better I'll tell you the explanation from the book.

Spoiler for "Under the Dome": It's an adolescent Alien being who is playing with the humans much in the same way as a human child plays with ants and a magnifying glass.

By the way, I am right behind you.

reply

In other words, a copy of that Twilight Zone episode with the little alien kid and the fake town with the couple abducted from earth.

reply

Pretty close to that yeah

By the way, I am right behind you.

reply

King is a master at ripping off Rod Serling's amazing writing.

reply

It reminded me a bit of Dean Koontz's Phantoms, and Roanoke, although that book/movie and the Roanoke mystery was a bit different.

reply

Exactly. I saw a few Langolier type plot points. For one, the only people that didn't disappear in the airplane were the sleepers. In Don't Blink, nobody was asleep. Hey, I'm just throwing it out there. I founf Don't Blink to be very effective and creepy.

reply

someone lost a plot.

I really thought this was going to be a good movie... I thought maybe the characters were dropping into a different time. You know kind of like a Bermuda Triangle type thing. That would explain why there were no birds, insects, animals etc.... I wasn't really thrilled w/the ending because there really was no explanation for anything. Oh well at least it was entertaining...

reply

I was also hoping this... I thought maybe it was a time thing and they had stopped in time it started good and was interesting kept you watching, but the ending was poor and it never really explained anything a good beginning middle and then NOTHING A very bad ending with nothing explained. God i hate films like this!!!!

Clearly this is a metaphor for rapidly disappearing society due to peak oil.

It all started when nobody had any gas left, and they couldn't get any gas. A significant amount of discussion went into getting more gas.

"My grandfather owned a gas station" was a metaphor for previous generations being rich with fossil fuels. Now, not so much.

The rest was pretty much life, just encapsulated in one weekend. People "disappear" one by one, just like people die, one by one.

The cops and the feds show up, ostensibly to "maintain order" but they too can't escape the long reach of the reaper.

The statement by the cop, "We've got to hurry up, we don't have much time" works on FOUR levels:

1) Ordinary cop at a crime scene
2) Cop at a crime scene where people are vanishing and they know they are about to vanish
3) People on Earth have to "hurry" up as our time here is limited
4) Only about ten minutes left in the movie when he said that.

What's the meaning? Who knows.

What's the meaning of life? Who knows.

We're here and then POOF.

Good post. Hadn't even thought of the peak oil thing.

You are really reaching, my friend. It was a horror movie, not an allegory. Sorry to disappoint.

Ever heard of allegorical narratives?

Maybe this was an allegorical horror movie.

An allegorical horror movie? Join a film club and group-discuss the deep-seated personal issues that lead you to make that statement.

reply

Wow, you're quite the douche. And very ignorant, too. I could go on and on re the subject of horror films as allegories; in fact, I'll go as far as saying that social allegory is what separates the good horror films from the bad ones, and that the lack of such a subtext is one of the defining characteristics of exploitation films, especially 'torture porn'.
Now, before giving me a smart-alecky reply meant to establish yourself as an authority on a subject you know nothing about, just Google "Horror film as allegory," or any combination that includes "horror" and "allegory".

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

reply

I always did find art class monotonous. Kind of like having a debate about a movie...

What the heck is "peak oil"?

reply

No idea. The most likely answer is people were being transported into another 'dimension' but why or where I have no idea. I doubt it was aliens. Probably some kind of time warp, but I have no idea why you had to not see someone for them to disappear, why sometimes they came back like Noah, or why sometimes they didn't disappear even when you weren't looking at them.

I like movies with loose ends like this. If people want a movie where everything is explained in the end there are already tons of movies like that.

What I don't get is why do all the paramedics disappear in the end just because the female character closes her eyes? The cops and firefighters could still see each other. I'm guessing what really happened was she was the one who disappeared, while all the emergency workers were still there.

By the weather being weird, I assumed some kind of warp space time bs with an All we are is dust in wind monologue at the end.

To me its kind of like Sphere, only with even less of an explanation.
The purpose is not to tell a complete story, but to mess with your head.

reply

Y'all are pathetic. They gave the plot away in the opening scene. John Denver, Paraglider, Dead needs friends

reply

They told us at the very beginning with the words Don't Blink, it's the weeping angels from Doctor Who. Except this time they are invisible!!!

reply

Don't Blink, it's the weeping angels from Doctor Who

I had that in my head the whole time I watched the movie; in fact, it was the primary reason why I recoded it.

reply

I just went to look at the reviews for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes, but ... they have all been erased!
