Great film but...

...dreadful production value.

its such an interesting debate that it deserves a well made film. horrible camera work and for a film that features two brilliantly spoken intelligent debators to have such poor sound quality that you need subtitles is criminal!

but it was immensely refreshing to hear a debate from an intelligent, honest (in his own mind) and articulate christian in douglas wilson.

so many times you hear the arguments from crazy pastors, americans (a country where 40% of the population think the world is 6000 years old), and non-intelligent religious debators that to hear one being able to coherently argue against one of the most brilliant atheist writers is fascinating.

its sad to think such a nice guy has deluded himself and will go to the grave looking forward to an afterlife he will not get. but the one benefit to religion is that on his deathbed he will have that pleasant thought. its just a shame he has helped perpetuate a false comfort in our societies.

there was alot of talk about morals, a very interesting debate, and both are really at both ends of the scales. religion creating the morals is really a chicken and the egg debate, and although douglas wilson argues it better than anyone else, you still feel basing any of the information in one specific religion is crazy.

its great to hear a great attempt at winning the religion vs atheism debate, and obviously no one can ever win, but you really cant beat an atheist like hitchins for logic, and you cant beat wilson for blind faith.

hitchins had a brilliant quote that sums up religion for me: religion is the first attempt at understanding our world.

its longevity is more a statement on the politics of the church and its use as a tool for control throughtout history filled with poverty. a tool which still controls a world that even now has over 4 BILLION in poverty. it is easy for me in the western world to not need to cling onto the hope of an afterlife and a better world, but if i had nothing and was going to die before i had really lived, i would be clinging to any false hope out of desperation. that is why islam is the most popular religion.

Bill Maher made the same point as you do about religion when he talked about guys in jail having "nothing but Jesus" to cling to.

It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced 'Throat-Warbler Mangrove'

Exactly.

It offers socially acceptable extraordinary hope.

It offers hope to those who may have none.

But it is still false hope, hope that rewards not in this life, but in an afterlife that is unlikely to exist at all.
