To those who dislike this film

To those who dislike this film,
Should Dunham have invented more likable characters, I'm sure she could have. Personally, I enjoyed the honesty of this film. If you absolutely hated the characters, I'd be interested to know the kind of characters you do find compelling.

No; not really.

I did not like this film, but I appreciated the fact that it wasn't Hollywood-phony.

I actually liked her friend Charlotte (kinda hot) and the chef guy.

War, one war after another,
Men start 'em who couldn't put up a good hen-roost.

I didn't like the film, but I also really liked Charlotte and the chef. They were the only fun, interesting characters. The others were stiff bores (but they are very realistic and a lot of people unfortunately are like these ambivalent, boring characters).

I don't want realism. I want magic!

I liked that many of the characters were dislikable. Actually there were points where I was made uncomfortable by how dislikable (but real) they were.

For example, while Frankie definitely wasn't the worst of them, Aura's situation with Frankie reminded me of friends I've had who didn't want my life to move in a positive direction because they would rather have someone to be miserable with. (Not that Aura's treatment of Frankie was nice, either.)

Aura's sister also reminded me a lot of my sister, especially at that age. I think it's easy for high school or college kids to see post-grads who appear somewhat aimless and to judge them for not having it all figured out, when they have not yet been in that situation themselves and seen that really, no one has it all figured out at 22.

if something were to have actually happened in the movie... i think that would have been enough for me to change my viewpoint on it. it seemed so bland and empty. depressing, almost.

reply

I didn't hate them, I just found them uninteresting. It seems like we're meant to find her utterly fascinating but no reason for this is ever given. Nothing about her seems to justify spending any time or attention on.

reply

Plot, story, character development, stakes. I think you need at least one of those things.

reply

The film should never have been made.

Its not particularly good or compelling. Its an example of a film that gets green lighted merely because the writer, actor, director comes from a wealthy, well connected entertainment media family.

reply

This movie isn't coming from a studio, so it wasn't "Greenlighted", it was made with Dunham's family money, just so you know.

I do not like this film on several levels; one of which is because the characters, each, are so unlikable. However, unlikable characters do not, alone, make a movie disagreeable. In this case, it's that the unlikable are also very uninteresting and this,, paired with their believing others (including the audience) should give a *beep* about them and their circumstances, makes this a very poor film.

I doubt many would find Alex from A Clockwork Orange at all "likable;" but he is incredibly compelling as he has charisma (his intelligence, his appreciation for Ludwig van, his sense of self...). Hell, even the Droogs are not likable but have charisma as each as a personality. But Dunham's characters do not have these personality traits...they are the people who are the childhood friends of your friends who are at the same party as you only because your friend felt compelled to invite them because they grew up together and who everyone is uncomfortable being around because they're so desperately uninteresting yet believe others should be interested in their situations.

For me I think Dunham's character would've been more likable had she tried to do the things she wants to do in life, and failed. She seems burdened because she HAD to get A job and because she seemed unhappy that life wasn't falling into place for her without really putting in any effort, so it felt very 'woe-is-me' and first world problemish. She wants to basically be a YouTube star/success but the film never shows her trying after graduation, it just alludes to her one attempt during school that was semi successful. Had she tried again, learned from her old attempts, and say had to get the hostess job out of necessity it would've made her character more likeable.
