This isn't the only of these to be not so Stand Alone in the Comics.

But for me personally it's interesting since I still haven't read the Comic this is based on, but I've read countless Comics around it.

War Crimes originally serialization actually interrupted Under The Hood. However where it interrupted the serialization is hardly an accurate perception of when it takes place. Based on when the original comics where published you should pause this movie between the DNA test confirming Red Hood to be Jason and Alfred's shocked reaction, and Bruce and Alfred digging up his grave. Overall I think it works best to read War Crimes as taking place first.

The super-nerd in my could complain constantly about the things this movie didn't mention. But the only contradiction between the movie and the Comics canon is that ti seems The Joker had been safely locked up in Arkham for awhile, while in The Comics he gets placed in there at the end of War Crimes, and had been MIA for awhile before that, being I think last seen in Hush Returns, which I'd rather pretend never happened.

If anyone wants to know what Comics to read to helps get the context of this story. I'll tell ya where to start.

Before

Robin Unmasked
War Drums (some individuals comics included in no TPBs that I feel should have been in War Drums are Batgirl 53, Catwoman 33 and Batgirl 54.)

War Games is collected in two formats, Act 1, Act 2 and Act 3, or Book One and Book 2.

Then Identity Crisis, Robin/Batgirl: Fresh Blood, and War Crimes.

During

Robin: To Kill A Bird
Batgirl: Kicking Assasins
OMAC Project
Villains United

After

Batgirl Destruction's Daughter
Robin: Days of Fire and Madness
Teen Titans: Life and Death (begins with what is probably the very next thing Jason did after this movie ended. But the rest should be read later, mostly)
Justice League Crisis of Conscience
Infinite Crisis and Infinite Crisis Companion

Note, the line between During and After I feel is a bit more ambiguous then the line between Before and During. Basically Bruce and Tim Drake were all over the DCU every month of 2006/6.

The movies don't need to follow the comics precisely. Loosely is enough. As long as the characters stay in canon they can show me whatever.
I find it boring when it's 1:1, like The Killing Joke.
I like the first part better because it's new, unknown. The second part is just 1:1 the comic. Boring.

I actually think the film is better than the comics it's based on because Judd Winnick (who authored the comics and wrote the screenplay) streamlined the story.

I didn't like the comics much at all but ... this is a great movie.

Honestly, most people I speak to who have a preference think the same.
