Bizarre movie

The French girl hides two horses upstairs in her bedroom, just a moment before the German army arrived. Are we to believe that she could do that so quickly?

Two German young men hid in a barn, are found by a full platoon and subsequently executed... all unbeknownst to those who live in the little house right next to the barn.

The French granddad hears about a British warhorse and travels for three days because he thinks it is the German warhorse he gave up years before?

The son gives his dad his cavalier flag in the end, because why? It is his, but where and when did the movie establish his connection with it?

The young man is finally connected with his horse, and after everything they went through, he lets an old grandpa take it, with little to no resistance.

Finally, the family that took the horse away from his mom are those that are rewarded having him in the end... I know this is how it works. But for a sentimental movie, it seems a bit odd. From the horse's perspective, his kidnappers repossessed him.
