Pipi

Is it just me, or is the character of Pipi one of the most annoying movie wives ever? All she seems to be doing through most of the film is complain and bitch to and about Coco. I really got annoyed at this aspect of the film. Doesn't she realize what's going on around her?

Her relationship with Coco definitely seemed odd, but I don't know if I found her annoying, per se. Maybe it had to do with her pregnancy. I thought it was weird how she apparently never heard any of the gunshots (although I guess it was a large building), or how she didn't look out of the window and see all of the signs of a world disheveled, since Coco didn't black out the windows until later in the movie, if you recall.

I think she had some idea what was going on, but was trying to remain in denial, largely because she's worried about the implications for her unborn baby.

I'm 15 minutes into the movie now, will edit this when I finish, but I can already tell I'm not going to care for her character too much. I mean 1) she saw the news broadcast, 2) she knew her husband was called down to the lobby and 3) even if she brushed that off, she could not get a phone call out at all afterwards. 4) Lastly, the news broadcasts continued to escalate the pandemic level.

So 16 mins in when Coco is inventorying everything in the house, she nags him about it and complains when 15 minutes prior in the movie she nagged him and knocked him for wanting to simplify their life and tough it out. She called him a "pussy" but now he's manning up or so it seems and she's knocking him down again.

Edited to add: 20 mins in, she continues to act like an idiot even after a visit from the Health Ministry guy, who was obviously infected. She seems to totally have no concept of survival.

Edited to add: 50 mins in, yeah she should have heard the gunshots and at the very least the charge that went off. Also, Coco should have been telling her the truth. If he felt he was protecting her by not talking to her about what was going on, he was actually hurting her in the end should anything had happened to him and she had to fend for herself. Or was she just that much of a nag. I mean my wife is a bit of a nag, but by then she would have wised up and started to nag about other things like the seriousness of the situation and become enveloped in the possibility that society as we knew it had come to an end, etc. And she threw alcohol in his eyes over an argument when he was the one who was injured...REALLY?

To be honest, sadly, I couldn't stomach much of Coco either. The things he saw and experienced should have woken him up far earlier than he did.

She was absolutely terrified. When in times of conflict, there are always going to be people who bury their heads in sand. She, being pregnant, was understandably one of them. I, personally, don't think she was a weak character. I actually think she was pretty strong in her condition.

To be fair, her husband started off a bit of an disorganized goofus, but she didn't nag as much as I expected.

She definatley wasn't meant to invoke sympathy, which is kinda what I liked about her character. I remember reading the synopsis of the film on netflix online before watching it, and getting the totaly wrong impression about the movie. It was described as....

" A man must rely on a unstable but well stocked neighbor to help protect his pregnant wife in the wake of an apocalyptic virus..."

Even though this is the story line, it really doesn't represent the events of the film. It kinda reminded me of repo man. A movie where the story line just becomes a backdrop for characters running around in a series of increasingly strange events. It gives the movie a kind of a strange life to it, and everything that is supposed to be part of the plot like the virus, the pregnant wife, the New World Order takes a backseat and becomes that much more intriguing. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass, but I really loved this movie! The John Carpenter/Sci fi style soundtrack was genius!

Her character served the purpose of being the one that down plays the severity of things. So yeah, she was annoying and completely unaware of her surroundings.

Coco was also pretty stupid, the unwilling participant on what was necessary to do. SPOILER

The scene in which Coco say to Horacio that they won't take care of the daughter... WTF... he deserved to be stabbed and shot at, after everything that happened.

The lion and the calf shall lie down together but the calf won't get much sleep.

It does seem kind of messed up, but that is coming from me and you living in a world where society and morality still exist. My favorite part about that scene is when Horacio ask Coco to kill him as a christian gesture, and Coco says "But I am not a christian." It's kinda funny and refers to a time when something like that would have been said in a argument about abortion or gay marriage.

Pipi is the reason why I don't want to get married ;P

Though I don't think she is the most annoying wife in film history, I have seen a lots worst than her. Yet, you have to admit, some mujers are difficult to deal with when they turn into wives, no lovers any more. The only scene I found her cute is when Coco suited up like a astronaut that was very funny to Pipi and they had some lover's talks; other than that, just nagging and picky all the time, and it's partly Coco's fault for being passive in nature, and he was such a azzhole not to let Pipi have any clue of what's going on in the building, such an irresponsible husband he was. They were perfect for each other.

On the contrary I felt she was the more level headed person in the whole movie. Here are the reasons why:

1) In the first few minutes, you can clearly see that her husband was a lousy, careless, lazy, disinterested guy. So she always had to keep reminding him the pending works (things that she probably requested him to do a while ago). Basically she was used to being the force to make him work on anything, else he would NOT do anything at all if left by himself.

2) The husband was never really wanted to be part of anything at all, it was his next door guy who literally dragged him into a situation where he had to react and do something (to save his own life and towards the end his wife).

3) Every single time he returned home, he lied to his wife about what happened outside, so she was never made aware of the events outside to get any reactions out of her.

4) The lies he told her was so stupid, it would make any woman go mad at him not to mention a pregnant woman, home alone in a quarantined building with no lights. And her husband lying to her that he was out busy fixing a neighbor's electricity problem while her own pegnant wife is sitting home alone in the dark.

5) He kept going out again and again without explaining her actions to her, so she felt really pissed off because A) he kept going out leaving her alone even though there is known virus threat outside B) not only he left her all alone in the dark and went out, but when came back he brought problems with him without any proper explanation.

So if you see, based on the amount of knowledge she had of what's going on outside and the fact that they are used to the virus situation (it's not day 1) and that her husband is a lazy man, her behaviour, reactions and actions were very normal. Not to mention, she was the one who changed all the lights at their home with that big tummy!

BTW: I am a guy.

reply

I don't think you make a good argument for her being more level headed despite her supposed lack of knowledge. She was aware of the virus situation, she was aware they were told to stay in doors, she was aware after a few days that the situation was not normal. As someone else on the board said, she was the embodiment of the apathetic, It'll all pan out eventually type of character. Apart from the occasional thing she did, like changing the lights, she acted as if the situation were just a temporary crisis and life would return to normal. During the crisis she acted as she normally would.

There are also some instances in which she should have been able to tell, despite her husband's lies, that something more than him helping someone fix something was going on. Gunshots, explosions in the building, etc. The way her husband acted when the old guy came looking for him. All of that would have led my wife to the conclusion that I was not telling the whole truth and she would've called me on it. Instead, with Pipi, we get an annoyed nag who treats Coco the same as before the epidemic. At least with Coco, although he got help from Horacio, we saw him change and grow from a lazy apathetic guy into a survivalist veteran with plot induced hints of stupidity at the end, such as not agreeing to take Horacio's daughter.

While I agree that Coco should not have continued to lie to Pipi, I imagine she would not have believed him or would have freaked out and complained much more had he been telling her the truth of the situations. Maybe he thought she couldn't handle it...I mean look at how she was acting after finding out about the virus. Imagine how she would have acted to learn there was a mini war going on in her own apartment building. That an old man had murdered an entire family without hesitation simply because the patriarch of the family attempted to kill him. The list goes on and on.

I don't give Coco a pass for his stupidity up until he wised up nor do I give Pipi a pass for being an ultra nag.
