Enough with these 'it was canceled cuz they're black' threads!

Seriously. These threads have gotten very annoying plus it's far from the reason this show got cancelled.

It boils down to bad writing...that's it. It has nothing to do with race and as I white person I can say this. The main character's race does not determine the success of a TV show. It boils down to writing and keeping the viewers interests. I mean these characters never even acted black on the show so I dont see how that even became a factor.

reply

I really wanted to like it. It was canceled because it was boring.

I agree. I wanted to like this show due to JJ's involvement but I was quickly disappointed by the formula. I can't believe in this day and age of multiculturalism some people still find ways to set back society 40 years.

Agreed.

You made some valid points. And your argument was solid until the "never even acted black" part.

What does that mean?

Also, no one here needed to know your race.

But, I think there is something to the phenomenon that no hour long drama, that featured black leads, has ever survived. When I say leads I mean that they definitely carried the show. I don't mean partner or sidekicks.

It's an amazing thing. And it never occurred to me until someone mentioned it in a post here. I've thought long and hard and I can't remember any.

Annnnnndddddd ... queue the 'blacks don't support black shows' comments ...

In a nutshell: It's black folks fault; we don't support our own shows; we "act black" and we wave the "race card" like a game show hostess on "Deal or No Deal." It seems that these are common threads of thought when others attempt to explain the failure-to-thrive of most programs with black leads.

My opinion: This could have been THE ONE. I was even willing to suffer a re-boot of Alias if it would have propelled the characters to the heights of making television history. For the life of me, I will never understand why J.J. saved his weakest writing for this particular show. Where was the suspense, intrigue, tension and cool-weirdness many of his other shows are known for? Abrams let me down on this one, and it was much too important to me for him not to.

I couldn't stand the ridiculous writing. I wanted to punch Mr. "made sex with your wife" Leo in his mouth and Hoyt was just too annoying. I wanted to like this show more but those main things made me cringe.

Rahrah you are one small-minded man.

Nevertheless, as long as movies and television shows are defined as "white" or "black," people like rahrah will continue to 'strike their picks and shovels' into the chasm that is the racial divide. Since most who think like rahrah stereotype most blacks by what they perceive to be "black" media, I suppose there's a kind of poetic justice to Asia airing the Jerry Springer shows. After all, isn't that how "most of middle American" whites carry on, rahrah? After all, "blacks are only 13% of America;" the other 87% are obviously on Jerry Springer, no?

~~Like most of middle America, I will not give credence to rahrah

LOL I just got done telling my husband that they wouldn't cancel it because it wouldn't be PC. . came here to check the status and it was cancelled. The annoying Hoyt ruined it for me. . actually it was terrible writing. .filler my husband called it. It is too bad because it had potential. . but also the sister was really annoying. . .

They should have a bomb explode all the annoying people out of the cast and make the married couple really angry. .

I was honestly bored with the show because there was too much comic relief in it. That kind of stuff loses my interest. That's why I like Alias, 24, La Femme Nikita, and Nikita so much more. They don't try to add in the cheesy humor. It just doesn't work with spy shows.

reply

I agree with you about the overdone "comic relief." When Ben Schwartz came on with that cornball act of his I felt like I was back in a 1930's movie watching the annoying comic-relief actors of the period like Frank McHugh. The leads were drop-dead gorgeous to look at and also made credible action figures, and frankly the fact that they were Black added novelty value -- with white leads this show would have been that much less distinctive and wouldn't have lasted any longer.

what does "Acting Black" mean to you? Explain such Term Bigot!
