Why did he act like he didn't know his daughter in the opening cafe scene?

I never did understand why he treated her so formally. He walks in and she sells him cigarettes. Then she serves his sandwich and coffee, and he acted like he didn't know her. He barely even looked at her. ....but during their other scenes together, they got on just fine, interacted with direct dialogue. So this has me scratching my head why he ignored her in the cafe. His own flesh and blood!

It's a weird little detail that has always bugged me.

reply

That wasn't his daughter in the cafe.

reply

Huh? I am sure it was the same girl. They look identical.

reply

Check again. It's a different girl

reply

I have watched the movie many times and yes it appears to be the same identical girl. Hmmmm. well if it's a different person as you say, they should take that into account when casting.

because it sure did throw me off, why he didn't speak to his own daugter in the cafe.

and if it WASNT his daughter they shoulda made her look distinctly diferent from his daughter so nobody would get confused

filmmakers often do this, fail to see from the perspective of what the VIEWER is likely to perceive.

reply

I thought she looked very different from her daughter

reply

really? that fascinates me.

I think you should look again. It's uncanny to me how similar they look.

reply

It fascinates me that you think they look so much alike

reply

do this for your own benefit. take a screenshot of both, then put them side by side. you may see something you're missing.

i have *no* idea how you can even *say* she looked very different from the daughter.

reply

I am gonna do screenshots and come back here and post them. Then you will see.

thanks

reply

Please do. I've been waiting for 8 months

reply

oh snap. was that really necessary? lmao

you 'could' have just fired up the dvd player and looked for yourself ;)

I'm too lazy

don't split a hair just to fuck with me. i am saying from a cursory glance, in a movie setting, they favor very much. similar hair chin nose eyebrows etc. But mainly the girl in the cafe was viewed mostly via profile. we had more rounded and full shots of the daughter.

but in any case, your 'they look very different' line is way off base.

being this is a movie board, i fully expect you to troll me with a 'they look nothing alike' lmao

whatever. i don't need another person to confirm what i know i saw, for myself. this post with links is to cater to your laziness :)

cheers.

reply

Thanks for doing the research. I'm still too lazy

reply

you are very welcome. I hope your laziness abates soon.

lol

That was Ellen Nyqvist, daughter of Michael Nyqvist, she was actually working there at the time and Fincher put her in the film. Small fucking world.

reply

interesting. yes, small world.

reply

Ellen Nyqvist was the waitress and Josefin Asplund was his daughter, Pernilla.
