I Call BS on Rooney Mara losing Best Actress.

Just because Meryl Streep played the same contrived Oscar bait character in a movie nobody really gave a *beep* about to begin with.
Mara displayed so much subtlety and nuance in this movie. she owned her character. She gave the bet performance that year without a doubt. I just hope she gets nominated for the sequel, because she was an absolute revelation.

I call BS too. I saw the performances of each actress in competition with her. Mara was the best. Period.

Meryl could be in a movie about a woman coming to terms with being constipated for over 30 years and they'd give her a nomination for it. I think the last movie I saw her in that I felt she deserved an Oscar nom was The Devil Wears Prada.

I don't think the Oscars believe in giving best actor/actress honors to 1st time nominees anymore. No matter the performance.

reply

Well, Christian Bale won for his first nomination. But that was for supporting actor - a different animal from lead actor / actress.

I agree that Mara should've won over Streep, but luckily she'll still have plenty of years to win the gold.

reply

I totally agree with you. That obsession for Streep is an unfunny running gag. And her still playing along is a painful lack of class.

Anyway, I stopped giving weight to the Academy Awards choices twenty years ago, when Tommy Lee Jones (with The Fugitive) won best actor over Ralph Fiennes (with Schindler's List).

I could honestly hug you after reading that part! Ralph Fiennes was so robbed that year that i'm still crying over it!
He may well win for his performance in ''The Grand Budapest Hotel'' this year though. He was really good in it!

Word. I mean, totally word. I don't often read someone putting a pin in the over-inflated balloon that is Meryl Streep.

I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative.

reply

Haha, thanks. Streep's hysterical reaction to Patricia Arquette's Oscar acceptance speech last week made me think even lower of her.

- No. But I'm afraid of you.

She crosses the street, she gets an Oscar nomination. It's ridiculous.

reply

I thought she was robbed too. She really did give the performance of a lifetime in this movie.

I'm sure Rooney will get an Oscar eventually. She's too good an actress not to.

reply

My main annoyance with the Oscars and its biggest flaw is how much they are suckers for people playing historical figures. That is WAY overrated. Like Sean Penn in Milk winning over Mickey Rourke is probably the worst, what a waste. Same with this case. I mean just take a look at this year's Best Actor, FOUR out of FIVE are historical character performances. That's ridiculous

reply

Winning is all about politics. There was no way they were going to give Rooney the win in a movie like this on her first nomination. She was much better though.
