What sense does it make to skip the 2nd and 3rd books?

With the news of the next installment coming from a new director and a new screenwriter the word is that they will also skip to the 4th book of the series instead.

Does anyone else think that this is incredibly stupid?

Firstly, the first movie ends on a cliffhanger. A cliffhanger meant to be picked up in the next book/film.

Second, while I haven't read the books, I have seen the first films adaptations of the books from Sweden and it's clear that the first movie is mostly just a set-up for the story line that follows in the 2nd and 3rd movie. All of these plot lines that are meant to be developed exist in the American film adaptation. Skipping to the 4th book makes the existence of the first movie meaningless.

Third, if they plan on this to be a series then skipping to the 4th book is unwise because they would have to wait for more books to be made before they can film another movie. And if they plan on going back to the 2nd and 3rd books after they film the 4th book then that is even more nonsensical because they could've just done that in the first place.

This whole decision just makes absolutely no sense. 

Yes it's stupid and you can blame Sony. I think skipping the 2rd and 3rd books has something to do with the filming rights which expired before they did anything. Maybe they repurchased the rights, maybe not. Fourth installment is more standalone and not by the original writer, so the rights were bought later on.

I guess it only make sense with new actors/directors. I would hate to see the 2nd and 3rd installments with different actors.

I don't understand why that would be a problem. Without a 2nd and 3rd installment, the first movie is rather useless. Besides, it's almost certain that there are going to be different actors anyway so it doesn't make a difference. Better to finish the story that was started than stupidly skipping over the conclusion of that story. They don't even have plans for a 5th book so what kind of film series is this supposed to be by jumping to the 4th book?
