the krakauer book

I read the Jon Krakauer book 'Where Men Win Glory'. I have read on this forum that some people dont seem to agree with what he wrote. Can anyone tell me what he got wrong?

There are also some pretty redundant parts in the book where Krakauer tries to describe what type person Pat was instead of relying on the interviews or facts. These are the weaker parts of the book.

Although the description of the friendly fire incident was pretty riveting, and of the region where the shooting happened.

I over halfway through the Krakauer book which I bought at a 2nd hand store for 2 bucks. I wanted it because:

a. I am very interested in the Tillman story (particularly as an Afghanistan vet)and

b. I really enjoyed "Into Thin Air"

I almost stopped reading when he went off on his anti-Bush, anti-Republican tangent blathering on about the "stolen" election of 2000. I don't feel that had much bearing on the story and I don't care for having to read Krakauer's political conspiracy theories.

I'll finish the book, but, I'm beginning to think that "Boots on the Ground" would be better...

I don't care about Pat leaning to the left. There are plenty of left leaners who served the nation when needed (like so many in WW2). There's also plenty of self-confessed right-wingers who seem to have excuses why they couldn't join up and do their duty.

Pat stepped up. I respect that tremendously. I think, had he lived, we could have had a spirited political debate over several beers.

Yeah, have a few fond memories of just that with Dude. (LOL) ... On a number of subjects.

Politically, Pat did lean left but wasn't fanatic about either view. Eventually it became clear to him the operation in Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, which is why Pat signed up.

Pat wasn't amused and a few comments that should have been private were made public.

I personally think Pat, a name, was sacrificed in order to promote the war effort but there is no solid proof of that. It remains strictly personal opinion.

IMHO, His Mom's Boots on the Ground ... is much more accurate. It's an account of her investigation mixed in with endearing Mom tales.

Agreeing Krauhauer had an agenda and used Pat as a vehicle to promote it.

Dude was uber honest with unimpeachable integrity and just didn't deserve to be buried in lies.

Krakauer was more interested in the fame and fortune of writing his book. Like the government, the military and the media, he felt he could 'improve' Pat's story with embellishments and out right lies.

For example, near the end of chapter 2, Krakauer talks about a young man out to prove his masculinity, as a rite of passage, by trolling the streets of San Jose on Saturday nights, looking to pick fights with rival high-schoolers. COMPLETELY FALSE!

A couple of hallway headlocks and a noogie or two with the 'buds' would be a lot more accurate - just not exciting enough for a Krakauer book.

"Glory" is a history book on US involvement in the region. Krakauer decided to attach a 'pretty face' to help sell the book.

The family never endorsed the Krakauer book and helped to prevent the original copy entitled The Hero from being published. I was told the character in that book was real ‘dark.’ As it is – I really don’t recognize the character in ‘Glory.”

The main sources in “Glory” are the widow - Marie, her sister – Christine and Christine’s husband – Alex. Hardly a cross-section of Pat’s friends or even family. Kevin was the person Pat was “absolutely closest to,” according to Pat, himself. Yet Kevin refused to participate in Krakauer’s work of fiction. So how does Krakauer accurately ‘report’ on Kevin’s ‘feelings’?

ANSWER: Krakauer guesses!

Can anyone tell me what he got wrong?

For example near the end of chapter 2, Krakauer describes Pat as spending his Saturday nights trolling the streets of San Jose looking for fights with guys from rival high schools.

This is false. I know where Pat spent many a Saturday night during that period. There was "the fight" when Pat believed a friend was being attacked but Pat didn't go looking for fights.

Krakauer, IMHO, wrote a terrific opinion on the regional wars but simplely attached a pretty face from current events to help sell it.

Pat and I called each other "friend" for 8 years. Hardly recognized the man Krakauer described. Way too much embellishment and guessed editorial concerning Pat. Seriously don't believe Pat would have endorsed Glory .... That's being kind.

His Mom, Mary's book, Boots on the Ground by Dusk was a report on her findings of the family's personal investigation integrated with some endearing Mom tales.

The Bar-Lev film was based on her book. I believe it to be the story Pat would want told in the style he would want it told.

Still luv ya, Pat! Will never forget. THX Dude, for everythin'!
