If Pat Tillman was an intellectual, why did he join a fraudulent war?

Someone told me that Tillman actually had a high IQ and was a gifted intellectual. There is a book about him too. But if that's so, I wonder, why would he join a false war started by evil criminals because he felt it was his patriotic duty and family honor, since he came from a military family? Isn't that how sheep do things? Why would a genius do something wrong and bad simply due to tradition and patriotic duty, when any freethinker can see that it's a sham? What kind of genius would do that? I don't get it.

If Tillman was a freethinker, then why did he join the Iraq War? A freethinker can see that the war is a sham without participating in it first. It's obvious common sense.

Risking your life out of family tradition doesn't make sense either. A freethinker or intellectual doesn't do that kind of thing. A soldier has nothing to gain in a war and everything to lose. Thus he has to be brainwashed and forget logic, in order to agree to go to war. Tillman couldn't have been very bright if he was brainwashed that easily.

On what basis did the NFL coaches say that he was an intellectual? Doesn't it take one to know one?

Well, at the risk of appearing intollerent, I'd have to say that WWu777 is certainly no intellectual.

As Callabashe already has pointed out, one joins the military not a specific war. Millions of brilliant people throughout history have served in the military. Risking one's life in the defence of their fellow countrymen does not make someone not a freethinker. Even more note worthy is the fact that many soldiers are free thinkers and are more aware of the inherent risks of their profession than averge civilians. Yet, they still volunteer and risk everything. Someone has to do it and, obviously, WWu isn't willing to. We're not sheep, we're sheep dogs. WWu and his ilk are the sheep - hanging out in a field, blissfully ignorant, munching (or smoking grass), smug in their intellectualism and unwilling to admit that there are evil people ready to harm them and their nation. Also unwilling to fight to defend themselves or their neighbours.

Tillman joined up because it was the right thing to do...period. Anyone with a sense of honour and a set of nuts did so. North America was attacked. 3,000 people died. Many answered the call and many sheep did not. After 9/11 many sheep-people said, "thank goodness I wasn't on one of those planes..." The sheep dogs, on the other hand said, "too bad I wasn't on one of those planes. Maybe I could have stopped it..."

That's the difference between people like you, WWu and Tillman. No matter how much you study, you'll never get it.

So the people who actually WERE on the planes were cowards and weaklings then? I love when people like you try to act patriotic and morally righteous by unintentionally insulting terrorism victims. Too bad you weren't onboard indeed; America doesn't need you or your nuts.

With the psychopathic administration that was incumbent at the time, placing your life at their mercy was the most moronic thing you could do. Even at the time, I was telling people warmongers like you that I didn't want to be able to say I told you so. And now, many years later, I still wish I wasn't able to say that I told you so. But ... I told you so.

He wasn't as dumb as he looked, but he wasn't very smart. He seemed like a typical oafish American who'd watched too many Rambo movies and figured his muscles meant he could go take on the evil A-rabs single handedly.

Of course, once he was there he saw the reality on ground and all but the most inbred, hick "ya-hoo!" American trash realise what they're doing was wrong,

Well - That's just not true. Couldn't tell you his IQ or even if he was an actual genius but he was intelligent. We met when he was 17. I thought him mature beyond his age. He always had a book with him and read a few pages whenever he got the chance.

He finished ASU in just over 3 years with a GPA better than 3.8.

There was a primal inner animal, which he let out on the gridiron but off field he was surprisingly a lot more humble than most might think. We shared many an esoteric conversation on existential matters. He got into my head and I into his. Pat is the most unique and unforgettable person I ever knew.

The brothers enlisted before US started threatening Iraq. As I understand they were not happy about that development but it's in their natures to fulfill commitments. Never met Kevin but know they were/are very close and in many ways alike.

Have you watched the movie (or read any of the books about him)? Pat Tillman enlisted to fight in Afghanistan after 9/11 since supposedly Bin Laden and other "terrorists" were based there. He did not sign up to invade Iraq but once enlisted had little choice. Although he could have been discharged early he believed he had an ethical responsibility to complete his term. After he was killed his brother Kevin returned to finish his own term of service for the same reason. Mary Tillman, his mother, was concerned because of her family's history of military service and in retrospect wished she had not stressed the "glory" of serving in the military, defending one's country.

I wish Pat Tillman had not enlisted, but he did, or he had taken that early discharge, but he didn't. He was intelligent enough to specify if he died he didn't want ANY military presence at his funeral. He correctly suspected his death would be used in pro-war propaganda. His family and the entire country were lied to by the military and administration so Bush and his handlers could use Tillman's death to promote their illegal war. They knew the truth from the beginning but concealed it and thwarted family attempts to reveal the circumstances of his grossly negligent "friendly fire" death.

I doubt Tillman would be so pompous as to claim to be an "intellectual" since he was a modest, even humble, person. Being intelligent does not make one an intellectual or a genius. If anyone had the temerity to call me an intellectual I'd sue for libel and slander. It's a pejorative, repellent term.

I honestly do not understand why anyone would join the military but that's an aspect of the environment I grew up in, just as Tillman's decision to enlist was influenced by his upbringing. If he had lived, after his discharge, he probably would have publicly spoken out against the Iraq war but we'll never know.

It's been 2 years since you posted that and i still want you to know how dumb you are. It's pretty easy to look back 10 years after the fact and see the war for what it was.

But you have to think about this as if it was 2001 and it's only a couple months after 9/11. Everyone was ready to go to war in 2001, Bush's approval rating were through the roof, the whole country was calling for war. Now we know different, but jesus man use your head. It's easy to cherry pick years after the fact when we have so much more information and can see the big picture.

You are a moron. The documentary explains it perfectly.

Yesterday - the 6th - was Pat's 37th birthday. There isn't a day that goes by without Pat coming into mind. Consider myself fortunate we called each other friend.

Intelligent? No doubt! Free thinking? Absolutely! A Patriot? Without question! Loyal and protective of family and friends? Grateful to have been a part of that! Adventurous? Loved that and him. Still do.

reply

Yup. And one didn't even need to watch it to know the answer. He joined before the Iraq War.
