Why does she go on about how 'ugly' she was?

When you see the archive footage of her before plastic surgery, she was an attractive woman. I mean, she wasn't a great beauty, but she had regular, even features and obviously took care of herself, and dressed nicely.

I understand women (especially from an older generation) feel safe cutting themselves down, but it's strange that she seems to have this deep insecurity about her looks....which is rather unfounded (?)
