You may not have noticed but the movie was set in Mexico. CZJ is Welsh. The characater was Mexican hence why played by a Mexican actress. CZJ doesnt even look Mexican. You'll be saying next that the criminal running the prison inside should have been played by Daniel Craig.

The only issue I had with her part was her interaction with Javi, the Kingpin. Javi is the most powerful and privileged man in the prison. I seriously doubt he'd be fooling around with her, a 40-something ex-junkie mother, who is very hard-worn looking.
Don't get me wrong. She was sexy in her own way, and perfect in her interactions with Mel. But not Head Honcho sexy.

I found it refreshing that they didn't cast a skinny, 29 year old model as the love interest.

First off, if Catherine Zeta Jones was cast, she would have been 42-43 at the time and Jones has played a Spanish-Mexican before...am I the only one here who watched Zorro..

But smart actors are usually afraid of being typecast in a role if they do one over and over again...she probably might not have gone for it.

As to whether she would be good!...dunno....guess she has lost a lot of her dazzling beauty pushing 40 so she might have been passable but they probably wanted someone younger and more plain Mexican looking!
