Did Barnes actually die at the end?

It showed a guy eating cereal and then answering the door where 2 guys ask if he is Barnes, he says yes and then it shows the guy in the limo who gives the 2 guys the nod to shoot Barnes. They proceed to shoot and kill Barnes, then the scene goes to Mel on the beach in what appears him waking up. Now earlier in the movie he talks about having this same exact dream over and over again, now my question is, was this scene also a dream or did this really happen?

I thought it was the real Barnes who was shot.

But I don't understand why:

1. The exec in the limo would tell the hit men it was the same guy.

2. Mel (Driver) would set up an innocent guy to die in his place.

My guess was that the Driver (Mel) knew this guy from some other caper & this was payback. But this wasn't made clear to me in the movie.

After your comment, though, it could have been a dream. The Driver might have an inner fear that someone would take the heat for his using another guy's name to get to Frank.

Well, from my understanding Reginal T Barnes was Mel's partner in crime who during a job got caught and Mel got away. Barnes then made a deal with the courts and ratted out Mel in order to go free, when Barnes went free he then shacked up with Mel's now ex wife while Mel was in prison. So Mel then goes on to talk about having this re-occurring dream of people coming to Barnes house while he is eating cereal, and he answers the door. Then he gets shot over and over again while Mel's ex wife looks on in horror and starts screaming. But the dream ends there.

So at the end of this movie, basically what Mel described in his dream was happening on screen, but then it showed Mel opening his eyes while laying on a hammock. So this action makes me believe he was again dreaming of this happening.

Yes, that explains it.

I must've gotten up to get a drink while the Driver set up the premise of his dream.

Thanks!

Yes, that's it. I don't really know whether he actually gets killed or it's just a dream, but from the look on Driver's face when he's in the hammock, he doesn't much care any more any way.🐭

Yes, after watching the film again, I'm sure it's just a dream, as all the details are exactly the same as in the dream he outlined earlier, except this time he recognises who calls in the hit. 🐭

When Mel set up the deal between Frank and Kaufman, he used Barnes as his name. Kaufman was in the car and far enough away that he was positive of the identification.

That doesn't make much sense...why would he give the nod to kill some random guy without confirming he was the Driver...the random guy did not even remotely look like the Driver, even from a distance..

wat are you lookin' at...

The guy in the car was a lot further than where Barnes was standing. It's possible from that distance he mistook Barnes for Gibson version.
