I really enjoy this show, but I'm concerned....

...that with the somewhat low ratings the show could be cancelled. Not only that, but the music rights could make it a hard show for Fox to offer on DVD, unless they change the music. In a perfect world, the DVD would be put out..with all the original music. :)

Well, the ratings aren't "somewhat" low -- they are extremely low. But it seems like if the show were going to be canceled it would have been by now. Anything could happen, but the episodes have already been produced, so Fox will likely find a way to air the episodes...and why not on Friday nights through January?

As for the DVD, they'll have no problem offering it, but as you said, the music rights may well be cost prohibitive, so they may have to substitute less expensive songs. Hopefully it won't be too noticeable.

They could be for sure. With the less than stellar ratings I suspect a lot of the music will be changed for the DVD.

No music will be changed, that only happens with older shows where the music was licenced for television airings only, and thus has to be re-licenced and paid for all over again in most cases for dvd release if the studios want to re-use it. The cost of doing just that is also why most older shows that used pop music end up taking the cheaper substitution route with studios subbing in music that they already own, or that are cheaper to license.

All shows that license music these days do so on the grounds that it will be for not just tv airings, but also dvd and other media releases into the future, that is now just part of a standard tv show licensing contract. So unless someone majorly drops the ball in legal no shows made these days should ever have to worry about such things.

Unless in the future another new media is created that rights holders can argue wasn't covered in the current standard licencing contracts, that is...

^It still happens from time to time.

'My Name is Earl' had a fair chunk of music replaced. And worringly, it was also a Fox show...and many of the songs replaced were very much of the style that The Good Guys uses.

I plan to stay positive though. ;)

Alley McBeal is a prime example. They don't even show reruns because of music rights. And you know lifetime has alley mcbeal reruns written all over it.

UncannyAntman: "My Name is Earl" was an NBC show. (You might be confused, some Fox stations show reruns of it, usually late at night.)

reply

True, I'd forgotten that...Earl is released by Fox on DVD though, so the point is still sound. :)

that only happens with older shows
Then why hasn't Cold Case been released on DVD?

I really do hope the show is released on DVD, I really love the show and I have plans on buying it when it's released. Of course I hope all the original songs are included, the songs are sort of a part of the show's character in a way. For example: could anybody here, I mean ANYBODY imagine the series being released on DVD without Foghat's song Slow Ride being in the show???? That's where I would really cry foul. I mean, it's Stark's cell ring for chrissakes! lol

This is a good show with a throwback to 80's cop shows. Compared to programmes on TV nowadays, this is a breath of fresh air. It's hilarious, and brings back the fond memories of the old 70's/80's cop shows like starsky and hutch, SWAT, TJ Hooker, ami missing any others?

The only thing is instead of placing it in a prime time slot, they put it on too late. I have to set my Sky+ just to watch it. There is technically anything offensive in it apart from some sexual slurs from Dan but they are harmless enough compared to shat that is said on TV nowadays. Take it for what it is, a lovable throwback to the 80's.

If they put this on earlier than it just might get the audience it deserves.
