Tom Wilkinson performance

I thought the part of Joe kennedy was very well done by Tom. This actor is one of the most talented out there and I really enjoyed role.

Tom Wilkinson was the most riveting performance. I never thought I was watching Tom "do" Joe, Sr., I was just watching Joe, Sr. Barry Pepper was also quite outstanding. Greg Kinnear wasn't as bang on for accent, but his acting more than made up for it. A lot of times, especially in profile shots, he made me forget it was an actor portrayal. An Emmy for ensemble, perhaps?

Tom Wilkinson played a fantastic role and as alanbuf said, it was like watching Joe Sr. I have heard of Tom Wilkinson but have never seen him in anything (that I can think of). He played a brilliant part and really covered the complexities of the character wonderfully. A truly phenomenal performance.

You're all serious? I thought his performance was atrocious. I grinded my teeth watching him.

I thought Tom did a great job as playing Joe Kennedy. I had to remind myself a couple of times it was him playing that particular part. As for the rest of the cast, I didn't think they didn't do that bad. Katie Holmes shocked me big time in more ways than one. She did a great job playing Jackie and looked the part as well.

Tom is a very talented actor. Unfortunately, I think he should leave this one off his résumé.

Got to say Finni I think like Heathcliffe in literature the Kennedys are difficult to cast and whoever plays them never quite gets there simply because they were quite complex people and in the Kennedys' case so elevated in the public eye it's so difficult. Tom I've seen in a few things here in the UK and I wouldn't turn the TV off he's a credible actor. No doubt in the future more takes and series will be made about the family but the same problem will be there. Liking our influx of drama here on the BBC though.

He is always very good. And he was the best actor in this series. Interesting his real wife plays his wife Rose here. I like to see if married couples have chemistry on the screen. Some do, some don't.

I thought he stole the show with this fantastic performance.

One of those here who didn't like it so much says,"I grinded my teeth watching him." Well, of course, if English isn't your first language you're going to have difficulty with a series made in English.

I remember the father and even though Wilkinson did not look like him he sure acted like him. Mean old son of a gun. I would love to see a movie about the mother Rose who I think gave as much as he did. And a movie about Ethel and Jackie because those two did not get along. Jackie did not even want her kids around Ethel's kids who were considered a wild and spoiled. I always respected Jackie for keeping her kids out of the spot light and away from those crazy Kennedy's.

Does anyone who knows about Kennedy history know whether Joseph Kennedy had a British accent. I've read that he was a British ambassador and whatnot but did that he mean that he spoke almost entirely without American inflection ever after?

reply

He was raised in Boston. He was the ambassador for a short time, 2 years at the most. I remember hearing him talk in old videos. He did not have a British accent.

reply

I think I know what excley is saying, but in my opinion Joe Kennedy was not given a British accent here, but the accent of a pre-war Boston Brahmin. You wouldn't expect someone like him to talk like Danny De Vito.

Wilkinson's accent wasn't awful.

It wasn't even an accent.

It was just an attempt at a pronouncing a word here and there with a non-English accent.

If he wasn't the esteemed Wilkinson (who is terribly overrated in my humble opinion), he would have been thrown off set, permanently, for his lack of commitment and/or ability.

Pepper occasionally pronouncing a word with a Canadian vowel I could live with, because he was outstanding otherwise so it didn't stand out too much.

Wilkinson was great! In real life Joe Kennedy, Sr. was as bad as a mobster. . .controlling, belligerent, egotistical man. But I have to say he looked out for his family even in a questionable way.
