How do you think "I love Karditsa" compares with the other Greek comedy of this season "Νήσος"/Island? Do you think that a Greek island is a more proper setting for a comedy than a village in mainland Greece?
I don't see why not? It was afterall partly filmed on the mainland, wasn't it?
Obviously it would have to be the right setting for the purposes of credibility (i.e. somewhere along the Messinian coast) but I'm not sure the international audience is that discernible. IMO Mamma Mia could have been set in Spain or Turkey without losing any of its specialness. Similarly I Love Karditsa could have been set in Crete or Corfu or Lesbos or any other island with an off-season population.
You have a point in theory but in that case it would have been I love Crete/Corfu/Lesbos and not I love Karditsa. My idea was that since it was a movie targeted at a Greek audience, the name of Karditsa invoked in the mind of an average viewer a response less favourable than Island/Nisos which was filmed in a Greek island. If you have seen both trailers you will probably understand what I mean, and dispensing momentarily with a strictly Greek audience requirement, which image resonates more in imagination, Greek islands or Karditsa or any other similar city of mainland Greece for that matter. Since both movies purported in a manner to reflect the local societies which are obviously linked with their respective locales, the question of which is more attractive inevitably rises. The point of the movies was that they cashed on the idiosycrasy of their locales otherwise they would not have such names- they could be called The Will, and Accidental Twins respectively. I was not speaking to the relation of the locale to any type of movie but the role- and the comparative response to the locale in those particular movies. I was not speaking generally, perhaps my response citing Mamma Mia as an example was not clarifying enough.
The distinction is still not entirely clear to me. I've not seen Island (the trailer or the movie) but I imagine I Love Karditsa could just as easily be I Love Mitilene or I Love Sitia. Or not?
Well that explains all. My whole point about the locale was based on the comparison of the two movies, one referring to an agricultural mainland locale-I love Karditsa, which could be also I love Levadia for example, the other the Island, referring to an island society, this last one could be Siteia or Mitilene. In the first movie the heroes were farmers, in the second some were fishermen. And my whole point was this:from two Greek comedies the one that chose to portray an island society(Island/Nisos) would be more attractive to the viewers for such a reason, than the one that chose to portray an agricultural society(I love Karditsa). That is why I named my post: comparison. Because you have not seen the other movie, the one element of the comparison, you could not comprehend the whole point.
