What? That is not even possible? Fighting for the church AND for absolute freedom is contradictive.
The church mandates certain rules to live by and when/if not followed you are punished by god. How is that total freedom?

It's more freedom than not being allowed to practice your religion. I'm agnostic myself and have no problem with people living their life as they choose as long as they don't try and force me to live it that way too. The government saying you can't practice your religion is just wrong, again assuming that by practicing it you aren't taking away someone's freedom as well.

That all being said, following your religion and everything that goes with it is your choice. That is where the freedom part comes in.
