Or is she just cruel. She's pregnant and cheats with a handsome guy next door. She gets caught by her husband. The husband leaves her. She still loves her husband and he eventually forgives her and everything seems fine even after the baby is born. She then arranges to meet the guy she cheated with and her husband gets wind of it. WOW! I think she's both...stupid and cruel.
shareI don't think she is stupid or intentionally cruel -- just self-centered. She thinks about what she wants and how she feels but does not ponder if others are hurt. She is right in saying that she keeps screwing things up; but does not acknowledge that as a result, she keeps hurting others. People like her do not feel guilty for long. I bet she thinks that since Josh seems to want the baby more than she, her decision to keep the pregnancy amounts to a self-sacrifice that would make up for the wrong of her infidelity.
She is typical of woman protagonists in modern literature or films that see extra-marital affairs as liberating (for women). For me, her character is unsympathetic but feels real -- even though I have no idea how representative she is in real life.
