Getting too good at sounding like a band of non-vocal instruments.

I think it's quite impressive that groups can do this, but when they do it, they lose the a cappella character. This is the reason I didn't buy Committed's first CD. I listened to it since my sister bought it, and it just sounded like a bunch of synths and stuff with guys singing to it. It didn't sound to me like their best sound on the show. Maybe it's time for a second listen, I don't know. But this is what I'm getting from a lot of the groups on the show now. Like the first half of Monday's show. All of them sounded good and technically were fairly on point. (I don't care what the judges said. They were pretty much on it with their rhythms and harmonies.) But it didn't have that velvety, blended sound I look for, at least, when I listen to a cappella groups. I thought the groups that did this best were Filharmonic, Ten, and AcoUstiKat. Even though I thought Ten took the tempo too slowly with "Tell Me Something Good," "fonky" though it was. Others were decent too, but the harmonies these three groups produced had me pretty much the whole way. We'll see what things these other groups come up with on different songs, though.

The only way to appreciate acapella and all great music is live, I never buy studio cd's and never will !

Hey I don't know. All they have to do is record it in the studio with limited tinkering. No use of synthesizers. Just the separate, individual microphones. And MAYBE adjust the volume individually as needed. Sometimes, it might be preferable to have two or more singers on the same mic and the lead on his/her own or something. That stuff is cool because it's no different from stage placement, which changes to adjust the sound sometimes. That is, when singers aren't jumping all over the stage, like happens often on The Sing-Off. Then again, every person has a mic on The Sing-Off, so placement is kinda moot.

this may sound crazy, but I would only buy an a capella cd if the group did like old school doo wop or classic r&b or something. Because then you that feeling that they are harmonizing a version of a song, and not trying to sound like the regular version the song. So I do get the sentiment about voices sounding like instruments being a turn off. Even though I've heard some really good ones like Vocal Sampling doing Hotel California.

Hmmm. I will have to check out this Vocal Sampling.
