Wasn't a movie with a similar plot released about the same time?

I don't think I'm thinking of Battle: Los Angeles which made a lot more sense relative to this one and looked much better too. I seem to remember another movie with aliens drawing people into the sky somehow.

Only without the bacteria. Maybe that part shows up in the sequel.

I don't know if it's the movie you're talking about, but "The Forgotten" (2004) did this.
