Opening Monologue (spoiler)

Did the host (whatever his name is) really have to do a penis joke? I had to explain this to my 9 1/2 year old daughter. It's not like she was up past her bedtime and I didn't think I should had to worry about this in the 8 o'clock hour on a regular network show. Am I overreacting?

Snelling, it's an awards show and it's my choice to watch, no matter who the host is. My concern was the remark that he made at an early hour of the show. What is your opinion of the remark about a penis he made at such an early hour of the show when kids might be watching? My child is 9 1/2 and when that remark was made it was before her official bedtime.

reply

This is the reason he was brought in. Awards shows are seriously declining in viewers so get in a host who will cause some controversy which will generate loads of free publicity, press and noteriety.

As for the penis joke, so what, kids hear worse everyday at school, sounds like this will get as overblown as the reaction to Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"

Ricky's doing a great job, funny and shocking while pricking a few of the most overblown egos in Hollywood, nice!

reply

Not at all! I think the host didn't have any quality, family friendly banter so he resorted to trying to impress his peers and use shocking language. I've always believed that a true comedian/actor/entertainer should be able to entertain with quick wit, quips, and language that is not vulgar or inappropriate.

YOU ABSOLUTELY should not have had to explain that to your daughter. But Bravo to you for being a parent and addressing it instead of letting her friends tell her.

100% overreacting. Did you explain to your daughter the subject matter of the nominated movies? Because if not, then you can dismiss the joke just as easily.

Plus as an award show, there's always the chance someone will make an off-color remark, regardless of the time. The difference here, is that Ricky Gervais is actually funny.

Anyways, now you know for future reference not to watch award shows with your kid. It's not the Teen Choice Awards.

reply

totally overreacting!

Ricky Gervais did discuss masturbation. I cringed a little. Not by the word "penis" (correct anatomy terms should not be presented as a source of shame), but by the act he was implying. Not very family-appropriate.

I love Gervais, though.

I agree on that Jane2005.

Why is your kid watching the Golden Globes? They drink there and many of the films are about adult content and issues. Have her watch the Disney Channel or something, or have her read a book. He's funny and it should have been coded enough she wouldn't get it. Get over it.

Well said atlas

Cheers mate! Love Ricky, but then me dad's from Belfast and I love the UK Office and I go to N.I. a lot.

reply

No worries, it seem's the mood is catching and have noticed some of the other speakers are starting to get a bit braver too. Could be in for a funny night!

Isn't 8-9 still considered the "family hour" on the network television? I also shouldn't have to worry what's on a network show at the hour. But if you're really that concerned, don't worry she's in her room now reading now before it's light s out at 9:30.

reply

Great. Reading helps the mind. As for the 8-9, which I assume means you are on Eastern time, CSI: Miami is on, 24 is on, the Thomas Crow "Affair" is on and "Cold Case" are on, dealing with murder, terrorism, theft, sex, and lying.

reply

Did you not see the huge(annoying)label on the TV that says "TV-14"? if you are going to claim you were offended by the comments because they were on during this so called family hour, then you clearly believe the FCC is in charge of your child's moral upbringing, then you should have trusted their judgment when they deemed the show only appropriate for 14 year old's and up.

reply

Your daughter shouldn't be watching the golden globe awards, it's not meant for children's entertainment. How about you handle the parenting yourself and use some discretion when deciding to allow a child watch something like this, rather than enforcing child-friendly language on everybody else who doesn't give a toss.

Oh Christ I've left the iron on!
