Cinematography (Spoilers)

I am far from being a film snob, but is it just me or did the freeze frame effect leading up to and during the big fight scene seem completely awkward and out of place? That effect works in a certain kind of movie, but it seemed incongruous with the film technique up to that point, in my opinion.
