Flawed, but very watchable.

I had the impression that this was in the "Four Weddings and a Funeral" / "About a Boy" sort of vein, which would usually put me off completely. (Films about "quirky" English people, made very much with an American audience in mind..? No thank you..!) However, Anne Hathaway is always worth watching and, with nothing else on last night, I thought I might as well veg in front of this on Channel 4+1... It is very watchable and, while I don't really feel it's a good enough film to elicit an emotional response from me, I did find myself getting a little bit teary. But, I didn't really like the episodic nature... Of course, that's the sort of selling point. But, while we seemed to get to know Dex quite well, I felt it rather got in the way of getting to know Emma, who remained a bit on the anonymous side all the way through... Then, there was Ms Hathaway's accent... To be fair, at no point did she sound American and odd sentences did sound convincingly Yorkshire. But, it was nowhere near consistent enough to fool the average British person... Romola Garai was wasted in a fairly minor rĂ´le... And, while much more restrained than some other films in the genre, the sentimentality was ladled on too thickly.

Too sentimental for some I guess. I saw it with some work people and my boss called it "emotional porn" but I loved it. Still love it. I drag out my blu ray of it every now and again. The ending always makes me well up and smile at the same time.
