Movie was such a downer

For me, the last scene was very uplifting and affirming. When they go back to 1988 and the end of that first day, and they part, not having any idea what they are in for, we see that their love broke both their hearts, but it was worth it. It transformed both of them, like Ian said, "she made you decent, and in return you made her so happy." And even though it hurt, and even though it didn't last till they were both in their 90s and until they died on the same day holding hands, it was still worth it.
