Just saw it on TV

Great great great movie. Loved the acting. Loved the story.
Very rare to see a TV movie with such terrific acting all around. Made it a perfect saturday afternoon for me.

My only one criticism would be that the mother should not have 'suddenly' given up alcohol. What she said to him about standing up was so powerful and revealed so much about who she really was - to add that giving up thing just made it unreal. Also the child abuse thing was a little unnecessary considring that already so much amazing stuff was going on with her life struggles and him finding himself.

Overall, easily one of the very best TV movies I have ever seen.

I agree with your assessment of the movie, moviemaniac. The film features believable acting in a realistic story with a positive outcome.

I must say, though, the reason Witt's mother is shown to give up alcohol cold turkey is that it's the most effective way a person can break a dependency on any addictive substance. In the context of this story, it could have been her confession to Witt about how she'd failed that helped her decide to give up drinking.

And I understood why they included the child abuse charge in the myriad of problems Kylie had to face. False accusations of abuse are a common hurdle many low-income parents, especially single parents, must overcome in their struggle to improve their circumstances and raise their children successfully. Notice that the authorities actually blamed Kylie for the fact that the apartment had mold, instead of putting pressure on the landlord to clean up the building. If the government really cared about children, the department that investigates abuse would either force landlords to clean up substandard rental units or help families find better housing that they can afford. Instead, they just accuse the parents of something that's usually beyond their control.

So, to me, those two story developments actually made the movie better. In fact, I could see these characters continuing in a sequel film, or even a series. I really enjoyed the whole story.

In peace,
Debbie Jordan

Spoiled rich kid's path on becoming a guardian character, A young single mother achieves her dream and receives love as the rich boy ascends... reasons why I love Hallmark. Ordinary towns, people and lives.

However, a little down-tune in background music saturation would be better.
