This idea would have easily succeeded if...

it was in almost any other part of the country. Most of these people in West Virginia don't know or don't care about their health. They are stuck in their ways and are too stubborn to change. West Virginia is known for being one of the least educated states and it shows. If Jamie tried this in a normal suburb in a different part of the country, parents and students would've easily supported this. The lack of parental support is amazing. Also, the lunch ladies, specifically Alice, need to shutup. Crying all the time because they actually have to work and not throw lots of processed food in an oven. She's getting paid, so she just needs to do her job and shut it.

The biggest problem, IMO, with Huntington schools is not just the fact they used processed foods, but they used the cheapest of the cheap. Heck, some of the food looked worse than the food ad McDonald's. They should have at least used frozen foods that are more healthy. On the other hand they were trying to go too cheap and trying to wiggle their way to meet the "food pyramid" despite the fact the food has very little nutritional value.

I think he'd have just as bad a time in other parts of the country - say, the upper Midwest where I have relatives. (Horrible place.)

As in the South, the people there are used to an unhealthy diet filled with animal fats and processed carbohydrates. And I hope it's changed since my last visit, but in my experience fresh ingredients are expensive or unavailable for large portions of the year - so people believe that there's nothing to eat but "hotdish" and layer cakes. And there are worse places, don't get me started on "food deserts" where there aren't any supermarkets or farmer's markets, and there's no fresh food for sale.

If Oliver wants an American show that could run for decades, all he has to do is go from unhealthy town to unhealthy town.

But on the other hand, the whole point with the series was to take action where it was most needed...

reply

It might have some, but I think having a foreign host was a terrible idea.

reply

Yes he is a foreign host but the whole show was his idea, he has successfully fought a battle in Britain for good food in schools, I think it was important to have someone who knows and are experienced in what they are talking about in regards to changing the way people perceive of regardless of where they are from.

I get your point though, the people he tried to change where probably not the most susceptible to anything different especially being taught by an outsider.

Foreign????!!!??

He's English. As in, speak the same language, watch most of the same TV...

If the guy was from Ethiopia, ok, but England?

Go get a passport, for Christ's sake; and please stop voting.

reply

Sharing a language doesn't make someone not foreign.

I'm British but I'd be quite obviously foreign if I was in the US.

reply

Foreign = from another country. CANADIANS are foreigners if you're from the US. So are Mexicans. But I guess since Mexicans have different color skin and speak a different language, that makes them foreign to you. God I hate bigots.

reply

Foreign????!!!?? He's English.

I have to agree. I'm British, but have lived in America for more than half my life. A British person would never describe himself as foreign, no matter where in the world he finds himself. A Brit is always a Brit, 'nuff said.
