New format = disappointing

What ive always loved about this show was the cerebral, creepy atmosphere created by the voice of Chris Walker and the brilliant use of sound effects and smooth editing. It reminded me of the old episodes of Unsolved Msyteries from the 1980's.

Apparently, ID has concluded that the old way needs to be improved. It now feels like an episode of 48 hours. Unremarkable narration and presentation seriously detracts from the basic atmosphere of the show.

It is just not as haunting and enthralling as the older episodes, even if the stories are just as good. This is pretty disappointing.

How did you manage to see a new episode, considering they don't start airing until tomorrow (04/11/16)?  Or are you basing your opinion on the 'sneak peek' episode?

aren't they talking about last season..that's when the new format started...oh this is from last april, then yes talking about season 7

It is very disappointing, I didn't find the old episodes haunting but I did feel the UM vibe. I liked the way they did the lay out and the narration was slower without the constant music in the background. It just really laid out a timeline of sorts that set out all the facts so that you could try to put it together. These new ones are more like the disappeared specials, which were okay but don't have the greatness of the orginal ones.

I miss the original intro and narrator. He reflected just how creepy a missing person's case can be, better than the new guy, I agree.

I don't know why the network didn't just keep the original style. I mean, the viewers liked "Disappeared", for more than just the subject. They liked the overall presentation, and it didn't need an update at all.

reply

I agree! I'm disappointed in the first new episode that was shown last night! It just seemed like a news report and didn't seem to have any personal take on the case featured. Maybe upcoming episodes will be better?

I kept having to make myself pay attention
Through the episode. I really miss the old
Host. The preview for next had him in it.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed it is.

"better call saul!"

reply

I felt the same way! I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention and listen and that never happened with the old episodes. The narrator from the orginal episodes does another show on ID channel so you would think they could get him back.

reply

I liked the old narrator more too. I don't mind the new one really, slight lisp is kind of off-putting, but I'm still super excited that the show is back :)

reply

OH it was so, so, sooooo BAD!

The new format is why I stopped watching original programming ID. Low quality re-enactments combined with obvious foreshadowing and\or predictable dialog that stereotype all the bad guys as pure evil, and victims as saints.

Why in hell would they dump the original format for something that so absolutely terrible.

reply

I agree with everyone - the old format is much better.

reply

What's frustrating is i've literally heard the original narrator promoting the new episodes in commercials for it. You thinking what the heck??

reply

I agree. At first, I thought I was watching Dateline (I half expected the Dateline host to pop in with his cheesy narration). This latest episode looks cheaply made & generically presented while the prior format was more compelling by giving the viewer a sense of foreboding mixed in with sadness & desperation. I had to force myself to watch this but my mind wandered off and I started watching old Web of Lies episodes on you tube.

reply

Okay, now that I've had a chance to watch the first new episode, and think about it, I'm in the "I like the old format" club along with the rest of you! 

I like that we are getting full seasons and the productions values seem similar to the old format, but it's definitely not as spooky as it was before with the original narrator. This seems much more fast paced where the old format seemed to take it's time with the slower voice and the day/time/location listings of the events as they unfolded. Maybe Disappeared will change it if the fan outcry is overwhelming. It seems they brought the show back when many people asked for it. The old saying rings true here, if it ain't broke don't fix it! It was perfectly fine as it was before. Still will be watching though!

I think the music is different too? Not sure if it is as foreboding as it was before..

The cast\crew for the new season is entirely new. Everyone connected with the previous seasons either quite or was fired. The only thing that is the same is name of the show, and the network.

I finally got to watch the new episode...I like the old narrarator better, but, it is the first maybe we should at least watch a couple of episodes and give it a chance....they might tweak it a little

glad it is back at least..
