What is a Jinn?

Seriously.

reply

The jinn are spiritual creatures in Islam and Arabic folklore. They are mentioned in the Qur'an and other Islamic texts and inhabit an unseen world in dimensions beyond the visible universe of humans. Together, the jinn, humans and angels make up the three sapient creations of God.

The block of text above was taken from the Wikipedia article on Jinn.

I hope this helps,

The Quran says the Jinns are creatures made of a subtile light. Satan is a Jinn, and Jinns are his offspring just like we are the offsrping of Adam. The Jinns can see us but we can't see them.

reply

Jinns are definitely not Satan's offspring. Where do people come up with this crap? Seriously. The Quran explicitly states that Jinn were created, same as Angels and Man. Not all Jinns are evil, same as not all men are evil. Jinn are just like Manm except they live in an overlapping dimension. They have their own religions, society, culture, etc. There are Islamic, Christian, Jewish, Bhuddist, etc. Jinns!

reply

What foolishness.

reply

Depends on the source. In many respects, they're the Islamic version of an Angel. Some are good, some are bad, some have powers, some are compassionate, some just go along and leave us alone. All the things you'd picture an Angel being. Check out Naguib Mahfouz, he's an Egyptian author who wrote, or at least put to print old stories, some involving Jinn. Some stirred the *beep* others tried to point people in the right direction.

Also, Jinn may be considered what English language turns into "Genie". In some of Mahfouz's stories, Jinn are released, accidentally or otherwise, and either help or hinder their rescuers.

reply

Wrong. A Jinn is not an Islamic version of an Angel. Angels are created from light and can only do good, they have no choice but to obey God. Jinns are created from fire, they have a choice to be good or bad just like humans. If you listen to the trailer it says, In the beggining God created Man, then the Angels and then the Jinn. They were created before humans. In the Quran it says "And the Jinn, He created aforetime from smokeless flames of fire"
Please educate yourself before answering a question.

reply

hhaha, you condecending sack of ****.

reply

Yeah, I'm not too worried. First off, I said it depends on the source. They're quoting a movie trailer as informational. Also, throwing the Quran as a source is good, but show me where to look for the info they cite.

Here's your source:

http://www.jinndemons.com/jinn-in-quran/
The word(s) ‘Jinn’ appears 32 times in 31 verses of the Quran.

Al-Hijr 15:26-42

26. And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud.
27. And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire.

And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance but Iblis (did it not). He was of the jinn, so he transgressed the commandment of his Lord. What! would you then take him and his offspring for friends rather than Me, and they are your enemies? Evil is (this) change for the unjust.
( سورة الكهف , Al-Kahf, Chapter #18, Verse #50)

If there is still any doubt that the jinns are not angels, you can reference a copy of Abdullah Yusuf Ali's English translation of the Qur'an and flip to the index. It's an exceedingly organized translation and will direct you to passages having to do with the jinn. There are many similarities between Islam and Christianity/Judaism, one of the differences is that in Islam angels are workhorses and their nature is not subject to free will and, therefore, one of them was incapable of rebelling. The jinn, however, are like humankind. There was a period of time when the jinn were allowed to inhabit heaven, with the angels, and after God created Adam, he asked everything in heaven to pay tribute to his new creation. One of the jinn, Iblis, exercised his free will to refuse to do so and an argument ensued. The gist of it was that Iblis promised to turn men against God to show Him His folly, and God promised to punish Iblis, along with all of those he led astray, by putting them in hellfire. As part of the 'challenge', Iblis was granted immortality and powers until the day of judgement to uphold his end of the challenge. An important distinction to be made is that, even though the devil is a jinn, Islam does not claim that all of these beings are malevolent. They're like humankind, and actually can choose their religion and can live their lives in a manner of their choosing. Deviating from religion into folklore, in Islamic countries, there are always tales about a specific jinn interacting with humans, sometimes these will be positive interactions, but most often they play out like ghost stories with the jinn functioning as a spiteful prankster. I'm honestly not sure if Islam insists that the jinn are more powerful than humankind (I've never read anything claiming that in the Qur'an), or if it's just that we have different abilities than they do, but these folktales always portray the jinn as much more powerful than men.

reply

Thank you, finally someone posting with a bit more knowledge. Jinn have different abilities then Man, but they are not more powerful. What I've found, generally, is that when people deal with Jinn, the Jinn is able to enhance and focus whatever abilities a person has. They cannot grant a person new abilities, or power. They have no greater knowledge. This is examplified in stories when the prophet Solomon dealt with Jinn and proved that they can be quite thick headed at times.
Essentially, they're just different beings, living in an overlapping dimension to us, and sometimes they mess with us, because they can. They have their own culture, society and religions.

reply

You're also totally wrong. If anything Jinns are more akin to demons then Angels. Angels are Angels, Jinn are Jinn, Man is Man. An Islamic version of an Angel is an Angel. Duh!

Wow, what a stretch that Jinn could be "Genie"! We would have never guessed.

Alladin is about a Jinn/Genie. "Genie in the lamp". It all stems from the days of Solomon when he trapped Jinn/Genie in various objects. 2001 Arabian Nights, great read.

reply

I was told Jinn's (Islamically) are like people but their forms are like smoke. And they live amongst people but we obviously can't see them.
Never read they were angels though.

As a former Muslim, I can tell you they were created from fire. Not light. Muslims actually believe in them, because Iblis (Satan in English) was a djinn. Yes, they spell it with a "d." I guess this movie didn't want to worry about people trying to pronounce it that way. Anyway, after Adam's creation, Allah (or God) asked everyone to bow down to him, and they did--except Iblis. He refused to bow to something he considered inferior to him. So now he is the enemy of man, aka Satan as most people know him in Christianity. I've never heard of a djinn being good, they are sort of the Muslim boogeyman in a sense.

reply

JIC you are interested to know, there are cases of Jinn who have submitted to will of ALLAH thus being good. There is an entire chapter of the Qur'aan dedicated to the Jinn - entitled interestingly enough Al Jinn (Surah 72). The surah is given from the perspective of the Jinn, in the verses 1-13 ALLAH(SWT)talks of early interactions of Jinn and man. To the point of comment specifically, verse 13 (translated) says: "and that when we [Jinn] heard the Guiding Discourse (Al Qur'aan), we believed in it..." This verse is referring to an event in the life of Muhammad(pbuh), he was reciting the Qur'aan when a party of the Jinn happened across him - in listening to the recitation and they believed in ALLAH's message and that Muhammad was his messenger. So there are Jinn who are muslim and they have been given free will to choose belief or disbelief as has man; only angels do 100% exactly what ALLAH says...this is why muslims refute that Iblis(Satan)was/is an angel, if he was he would never have rebelled.

reply

Satan was an angel according to the bible. Demons are fallen angels, that's all. Everything else is deception, once again, according to the bible.

reply

i am a muslim so i can explain it better... than others calling it "folklore" and crap like that...

christians have a different belief but in all essence jinns are what you call demons... muslims believe that satan was not an angle but a demon/jinn(made of fire)... simple as that... they are a separate race than humans and angels and not people who later become demons/jinns after going to hell(don't know if it is what christians believe but "supernatural" showed it that way:D). There are good jinns/demons and bad ones as well just like humans and follow different religions that exist in this world... that is all ladies and gentlemen...

and one more thing... satan does not rule hell like christians believe... everything in existence is created by ALLAH and satan will burn in hell after judgement day...

Look inside yourself and understand the universe

Demons are beings who never walked the earth, they never lived on earth as a human, but rather have always, only existed as an evil entity whose sole purpose is to wreak havoc, and cause destruction to mankind. Not sure if that's what you referred to as being portrayed on "Supernatural" as originating from humans who'd passed on in death, cast into hell, and then became demons/djinns.. But Christianity beliefs are adamantly strong in demons not having ever been human beings.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the fact that God is the ruler of ALL, and that indeed the day will arrive when God casts Satan into the fiery abyss of Hell that some believe Satan rules over. He doesn't. God rules over all, and Satan's final judgement day will come just as it does for each and every one of us, human beings made of flesh and bone.

It is quite troubling that so many Christians and Muslims clash in such an extreme, drastic way that all too often ends in violence heaped upon one to the other. Troubling in that the religious beliefs are so very similar, in so many ways, yet it seems that way too many just focus on the differences. Sad, but true.

reply

That's because Catholicism created Islam. It was always their intention that the two would be at odds. Up until Antichrist...

reply

Christians who read the bible know Satan doesn't rule hell. He rules earth. That's some kind of mythology Muslims have about Christians.

reply

Yeah.. right... And how many Christians that know it, do you know? Im from a Christian family and nobody could believe it.
From the Bible:
"And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish."

He said that to Jesus.

reply

Many are called but few chosen...

reply

Let me put it in a different perspective. When Christians do an Exorcism, they're exorcising demons. When Muslims do an exorcism, they're exorcising a Djinn. Therefore, the conclusion is that demons=jinn. But, not all Jinn are evil, although there are some really really bad ones because Satan is an immortal Djinn.

reply

As well as what has also been written here... a Jinn has also been the story behind Genies. Disney may have changed the stories around to be if you find one in a lamp they grant you 3 wishes and what not... or a hot chick found on the moon to be your wife if it's female... but the folklore of the origins of a Genie are more the quote "be careful what you wish for" as they tend to be deceiving evil bastards who will trick you for their own purposes.

However, it's all *beep* no matter whose origins of the fairy tales you hear from G to X rated versions it's all a bunch of ancient campfire ghost stories re told and changed over many years.... just the same as Demon originally is a Latin word for angel, now believed to mean what you think it means.

reply

Disney steals all their stories and teach children ancient religion and paganism. Makes sense demon and angel are from similar sources as they were at one time the same thing according to the bible. Read Socrates writings on daemons, quite interesting.
