Beautiful and Overrated

I totally enjoyed watching it but in the end i guess though it was one of the most beautifully directed movies it is overrated i mean why so hype about it there are many more flicks just like that yeah minus the splendid spainish bits
Music is mystical, poetry was great, acting wise good except abhay deol (despite being a big fan of abhay deol i guess he acted so gayish throughout the movie :))
Nothing bad to write about the flick but yes thats true "IT IS OVERRATED"

reply

Overrated? I think there's more than enough negative buzz going around for the film. I guess you're concentrating on the positive reactions alone. Many call it Spanish tourism ad, slow, boring and what not. Overrated is what you'd call if this film got better reaction than what 3 Idiots got.

reply

look overrated doesnt mean that the flick is bad or something i don't know what other ppl says they sure have their own views on it but as per my tiny bit of movie knowledge i don't think it is an extraordinary story and a rating of 8 yeah it is over rated.... man i think i liked "Darjeeling Limited" more than i liked this one but as i said i liked the music, lyrics, cinematography but it failed to tingle my moviebuds.....again its just me so i guess we don't need an argue.

reply

No, I respect your opinion surely. What I said was, this film is not overrated (ie getting overwhelming praise which is not deserved) at all by Bollywood standards. Almost all positive reviews were balanced and then there were extremely negative responses too. Same with audience, I've heard many criticize the movie for being "slow" and being "Spanish tourism ad" (which is utter bollocks, btw).

Oh and I love Darjeeling Limited, I'm a big time Anderson fan myself. It would be extremely unfair to compare this to TDL though.

reply

wats a movie that tingled ur movie buds

reply

its not that bad .. its just that more emphasis was put on the sports where they go at length to show it and explain everything .. so its cool to show and explain the bull run and tomato festival as if we dont know already.. why cant they just show these things as they happen without explaining .. the cinematography and the spanish advert overshadow the little drama there is in the movie.

really enjoyed the banter between the leads but they were very few and you are actually waiting for the friends to sit down and talk and not just keep exploring ...

This is where 3 idiots and dil chahta hai score .. superb and crisp narrative and no heavy reliance on technical aspects..

reply

"the little drama there is in the movie. "
little "Bollydrama" so to say. Which was the best part imho. 3 Idiots was so overrated, as it was loud and lame at many places (Enjoyed the film, but nothing worth watching over and over).

Road movies have much less drama, which is it's beauty. Sideways would be a good example for this. Or like OP mentioned, TDL, which is much more similar to this film (though not exactly a road movie per se).

It's a new genre, and despite the minor glitches, Zoya has managed to pull it off, so hats off to her I guess.

reply

eveythngs okie i never said it was a bad movie i myself enjoyed every bit of it it wasnt slow or documentary abt spain tourism ( i dunno why ppl keep pulling that spain thing cause if you are pissed off about locations and festivals you completely missed the whole idea behind the flick) but really do you think 8.2??? i mean cmon i read sumone said it should go for Oscars hello!!!!!

reply

but really do you think 8.2

That would soon drop to 7-7.5 range. I hope it gets steady on average 7.7-7.8 scale. 3 Idiots is 8.0 (*facepalm*)

i mean cmon i read sumone said it should go for Oscars hello

What he said was, we would have a better shot if we send a film with global appeal instead of the ones like Chillar Party. Nothing else. Check the history of the film we've sent for Oscar - there are some awfully mediocre films in there.

reply

"Global Appeal" now you are going too far man if youre saying this just for the fact that the entire movie was shot in spain you again missed the whole idea behind it this is not about road trip ,this is not about fancy festivals and exotic locations or super tanned hritik and sexy kat this is about relationships and reinventing yourself just like dil chahta hai and lakshya.
And i strongly feel that we wont get any Oscars until we stop writing scripts keeping superstars in our mind we should develop the character and then decide who can live it better no matter how big or small star he is and that is the biggest problem in our industry people wont recognize your flick if you don't have stars in your film.Trust me i choose my films very carefully Abhay deol was far more better in manorama six feet under and dev d look at him in znmd i mean he acted totally *beep* same farhan luck by chance and rock on and hritik again lakshya. I guess you probably follow movies quite seriously but i guess ZNMD is far behind the likes of Manorama Six...,Dor,Hazaron Khwahisheyn aisi,Eqbal,Udaan, paanch, black friday And many more i can go on and on to prove you that ZNMD is a nice movie but its not brilliant or exceptional.

How about you don't put words in my mouth? I myself said in the other thread that Udaan deserved to be sent ahead of ZNMD. I was just explaining to you what OP said in the other thread - that we're better of sending films like ZNMD than Chillar Party. Road films have wider appeal than so called "mainstream film" we churn out. That's all.

Manorama Six...,Dor,Hazaron Khwahisheyn aisi,Eqbal,Udaan, paanch, black friday And many more i can go on and on to prove you that ZNMD is a nice movie but its not brilliant or exceptional.

Non sequitur. If you ask me Dev D and some of the above listed are a vastly superior film to DCH. So?

Of course they are better than ZNMD, that's because unless it's somewhat dumbed down, you can't simply shove a so called "purist" films of a relatively unexplored genre down the throats of our mainstream audience, as it's bound to fail, especially when it's made on big budget. The transition is never going to be easy. They handled it well imo and made a good movie. That's all.

And no, you can't "prove" anything as opinions are obviously subjective, not that I disagree with you.

PS: Dor is overrated. Rest are all great, many of them are my favorites.

reply

lol so are we gonna discuss about "Dor" now i dont know why you feel the movie overrated if you are saying so because it scored something around 7 or 7.5 on IMDB hammmm i guess its quite good rating(and i guess gul panag is not that bad she deserve more). You know the road movie concepts are so ordinary these days that every 3rd movie in Hollywood is about road trip but its okie if you like that kind of stuff i am no one to judge anything and above all no matter what genre or what flicks we liked its alwaz nice to meet ppl who are passionate :)

And you know what is overrated Oscars :) wasted my 1.5 hrs watching Monsters Ball and i still regret it :P

No, I say because for the level of critical acclaim it has recieved, it is overrated. I've seen both Dor and it's original. I just felt it was a wee too melodramatic for my liking. The premise itself had so much of promise. I don't rate original that highly either, (ftr it's rating at present is 7.9) to each his own, I guess.

Nope, road movies are not so often made in Hollywood either compared to other genres. Besides it's much more relateable to the hollywood audience, than our other so called "mainstream films". That's probably what OP meant. This is a total non issue BTW, I've even myself conceeded that Udaan deserves to be sent ahead of ZNMD, what exactly are you contesting here?

And you know what is overrated Oscars :) wasted my 1.5 hrs watching Monsters Ball and i still regret it :P

Add Slumdog Millionaire. And Rocky. And Shakespeare in Love.

reply

contesting.....hell no cmon am not a critic or sumthing i just love watching movies no matter what genre, language or storyline i simply love watching them and that is why i write whatever i feel if you feel offensive or something m really sorry was really nice talking you.... see you around :) & despite being a Danny Boyle fan slumdog was not more than a B grade hindi movie
P.S. ZNMD is still overrated and will always be PEACE :P

reply

i feel if you feel offensive or something m really sorry was really nice talking you....

Why would I feel offended? I was merely asking you since we are on the same page, what exactly is the issue here?

P.S. ZNMD is still overrated and will always be PEACE :P

Unless you take into account the negative reviews that is. Critical reviews were positive, but not overwhelming. There were scathing reviews like from Raja Sen and a few others OTOMH. The rating will sure go down, (It was 8.4, now 8.2) so don't make any claims based on that.

reply

the only issue is that you dont want to face the truth about the flick so i guess i should stop here :) and one more thing i don't believe on critic reviews or number games i judge my own movies and i rate them accordingly i never said anything bad about the movie i just said it was beautiful and overrated and it still is the one and only thing that scored was music and lyrics

reply

Why don't you read my posts properly? I'm not disagreeing with you AT ALL here for most parts, the movie has got its share of negatives. I'm just saying that I don't think it is overrated, i.e., it is getting a lot of negative reaction, that's all. Maybe you just read the positive reviews.

reply

Horribly slow...almost a "Lonely Planet - Spain" book made into a movie...Katrina & Kalki were rubbish...music was ok nothing great...altogether 200 bucks for a few lines of Javed Akhtar shayari :((

reply

lol thats harsh.... :) i watched "7 khoon maaf" @ 270 per tckt and it was the most horrible mistake of my life.... i was in coma for the next 7 days :P so i guess ZNMD is not that bad atleast u gt the shayaris

reply

Disagree about the slow part, it was adequately paced. Katrina was rubbish. Kalki was so-so. Music was pretty good, takes time to grow on ya.

reply

I saw this here in New York. The crowd liked it one could tell but I was the only one clapping. Over-Rated? Maybe not.

"There. There."

welcome to the zone :)

It currently has 4.5 stars (out of 5) on netflix in the US.

reply

I wouldn't say it's completely overrated. Obviously it was a bit too long and the plot's development was not really that great (I just never felt anything during the whole son-abandonment issue, but seeing Shah was a delight), but this is definitely one of the greatest road trip movies India has ever made. Hats off to Zoya Akhtar; just like Luck By Chance she has amazed me by her direction and Javed Akhtar for those beautiful poems in Imran's narration.

PS: I'd still choose Luck By Chance over this movie. And yeah I know, ZMND and LBC are like comparing apples to oranges.

RIP The Rev.

reply

ofcourse Luck by chance was better film, with powerfull performance by konkana

reply

I was able to watch bits and pieces, but today i saw the whole movie. Its such a long time since Dil Chahta Hai. Its just beautiful.

reply

i liked the movie... i do not think its overrated...i felt like im not wasting my time on a hindi movie after a long time :)

reply

How often Bollywood makes movie like this ?
They are busy making stupid and senseless movies like Singham, Bodyguard, there is long list of that.

In India this movie deserves 8/10 and comparing with international movies it would be overrated and should be 6-7.

I think the direction, humor and the overall play on the sentiments in the film really sets this film apart from any other bollywood film I have seen in recent times. I gave it a 10. You say it's over-rated? ok. The distorted friendship between three good friends and their holiday induced camaraderie..

The film is over-rated? I think it's a super difficult to make and the director has successfully casted Hrithik, done obvious joyful justice to her brother Farhan Akhtar and immortalized and given sense to Katrina and above all good humored Abhay...

I mean over-rated?

"There. There."
