MY UNBIASED REVIEW OF RA.One

MY UNBIASED REVIEW OF RA.One

Plot Synopsis
A game designer creates a game from which the villain steps into reality and creates havoc..In order to defeat the villain the hero of the game is brought into reality...

Acting
This is one of Ra.One's weak points...The ladies of this movie have done a half-baked job...Shahana Goswami was poor, and Kareena acted below her potential [actually i think thats all she can do!]...
The kid,Armaan Verma, did a very good job..playing the arrogant kid is usually overdone by most child actors but Armaan was great..
Tom Wu did a good job as well...
Arjun Rampal also did a good job,but i felt he wasnt given much room to improve..
Shahrukh was just average..............Just Kidding...
Srk as usual takes the entire acting of the movie onto his shoulders...Once SRK is on screen he takes full command of the show..He does a thriple-role in this movie...
"Subramanium" is hilarious..i dont care what others thought but i thorouly enjoyed his jokes and antics..I saw shades of past performances of SRK's Om Prakash Makhija[OSO] & Surinder Suri [RNBDJ] ..but thats nothing bad...
"G.One" is a bit rigid, but ofcourse thats what a video game character is...G.One mainly shines in the action scenes..
"Lucifer" is a short character played by SRK in the beginning..Even though he is played in a over the top fashion, its understandable based on the situation...

So Acting-3.5/5 [since its basically SRK that does all the work]

Story
Universally the story has been blamed..But considering the recent stories bollywood has come up with, this is actually very good..The origin of the technology was done very quickly and if u miss certain scenes, its understandable that u may get confused..But at the heart of this movie, its not a drama, nor romantic, neither comedy...its science fiction..an open mind is the first thing that is needed to enjoy the movie...

Story-3/5

Action
This is the main genre of Ra.One and it completely fulfills it..Action junkies will be surely pleased..The visual Effects go hand in hand with all the action scenes and we end up with the type of action scenes that could easily be mistaken for a Hollywood movie..

Action-5/5

Comedy
If u take out the action scenes of this movie, the movie gives priority to the comic genre..Even though Subramanium had a fun time dishing out the jokes in the first half,it becomes hard for G.One to compete with the level of jokes in the second..So we have back up comedians such as Satish Shah, who does a fantastic job...But the problem is the very risky type jokes that take hold especially in the second half..[The Airport checking scene was very very Bad]..You may even wonder wheather its a PG-13 movie..the jokes are such adults will surely enjoy

Comedy-3.5/5

Visual Effects
As i previously said,RA.One is the benchmark for Indian Cinemas in the matter for visual effects...NO movie has ever had the level of effects as RA.One,with the exception of Endhiran/Robot...The quality of the visuals are all Admirable..The scene where G.One first meets Ra.One[Blasting cars into the air] is amazing...

Visual Effects-5+/5

Music
Vishal-Shekhar have done an amazing work in the music department..the music videos of "Right By Your Side","Chammak Challo","Criminal","Raftaarein" were all rocking...The video/montage of "Bhare Naina" was partially boring, but the song is one of the best..."Dildaara" is the main tune of the movie ,and its rightly used..

Music Picturisation-4.5/5

Cameos
Priyanka is just ok ---2.5/5
Sanjay Dutt is good---3/5
But the presence of Rajinikanth will send shivers up your spine, too bad its just 1minute long ---5/5

Direction
Ra.One is a well made movie,Anubhav has definetly improved...Though some scenes could have omitted or shortened[2,4 scenes]...the movie runs with a fast pace, but when such scenes slow it down, its possible u get bored within a minute...some more editing could have been made..

Direction-3.5/5

Movie-RA.One
RA.One as a movie is high on visuals and graphics. Its a landmark for Indian Cinema.Comparisons with Hollywood are inevitable but those SHOULD be ignored, as they are just baseless...Ra.One has brought upon a new dawn for Bollywood, appreciate it,cause very few have done it..

RA.One---8/10

[update-everyone asks why its 8 instead of 7[which is what u get if u calculate based on each category...the extra +1 is for the effort for bringing about something new to indian cinema [i know about krish, robot etc, for which i would have given an extra point to if i were to review them]

reply

I think it should not be more than 7/10 based on your own review.

reply

only one thing to say HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

reply

reading my review,it will seem i am a srk fan[which i am]...but i wrote this with an open mind.

reply

How much open is your mind to western movies?
BTW from comedy point of view I'd give your review a rating of 10/10

Obsession is young man's game:Cutter(The Prestige)

reply

thanx,i guess.... :)

by an open mind i meant, i wasnt going to trash the movie just because it had some similarities to western movies...and ra.one is india's first such movie that has effects that can be compared to hollywood....hollywood has moved on to the next stage of visual effects---motion capture tech (avatar, rise of the apes etc)...so even though Ra.One cant level with Avatar or 2012 (just 2 random movies)in the visual stages it has come closer to such levels

reply

what's with u people...?? stop comparing a movie to Hollywood,Dumbnuts...thats not a benchmark...special effects and CG are meant to show things real, not to make a movie look like hollywood movie...jus bcoz of people like u who want movies like hollywood these dumb film makers create halfbaked and idiotic stories with nothing in it...ofcourse,till idiots name their film industry as Bollywood how cud we expect good movies,pity...!!

reply

@shriram

Fortunately or unfortunately the people at hollywood are best at the art of visual effects..and india need to look into this department inorder to bring more freshness into their usual line of movies....why cant india name its industry bollywood? whats wrong with it...why should we be intimidated to use the word bollywood just because it rhymes with what the american movie industry is called?dont we use their language to communicate?

how many movies like Ra.One have u ever seen in India?Other than Robot/Enthiran very very few movies have utilized the visual effects like these 2 movies have and Ra.One has improved on many effects featured in Robot...

And what is wrong with this story?everyone is just calling it idiotic without giving any reason...

reply

Unbiased my a*s

thanx for that very enlightening info...now move along,if u dont have anything else to say

Unbiased... hmmm

Obviously you didn't put the reviews in the review-section but here in the discussion thread, because you wanted our opinions on your review. So here is mine:

You are right about ACTING, one of the weak points of this movie. But where you are wrong is considering SRK as an exception. You see, I 'was' an SRK fan at one point. I enjoyed his performances in likes of Devdas, Chak De India, Swades, even Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (some parts), to name a few. But he has changed, or maybe just he needs a director who would be able to squeeze out his true potential which is hidden somewhere deep. Its his home production movie, and his acting shows that he was the boss on the sets, not the director. His acting lacked impact!

He had a better South Indian accent in a comic part of Om Shanti Om. In this movie, he seemed like trying hard to fit in, and failing. He has this natural ability to provide stand out performances in emotional scenes. But here, people didn't seem to care much for him when his character 'Shekhar' died at the hands of Ra. One. Another fail! I could go on and on about other scenes too, but I think I've proved my point.

About STORY, most people are wrong when they blame the story. I think the story was good (not short of plot holes though). However I have a problem with the story-telling. The way they went about its execution seemed so childish, like they were either rushing through things, or slowing it down entirely, dragging the scenes (Bad EDITING).

When it comes to ACTION, I would say 50-50, some cool action sequences, some really repetitive and boring ones. Some scenes just seemed like they were having photo-shoot for SRK, rather than making him fight (the train scene showing SRK spinning for no reason so many times). The climax between G. One and Ra. One was supposed to provide the best action sequence of the movie, instead it was mostly those guys throwing fireballs at each other.

COMEDY was average, cheap adult jokes. Satish Shah was wasted. But they did present it as one of the movie's main genres.

Cameo of Rajnikanth was unexpected and yes, it worked. Wish they had shown more of it, yes. That being said, Chitti vs G.One? Chitti wins (not because of their abilities) because he acted like a Robot, SRK seemed more human as G. One (Can't help with his expressions can he? lol).

MUSIC was partly good. Two hit songs in a movie do play a part in its success.

Anubhav Sinha (CASH) was not an able enough director for this big project. Poor choice there.

The biggest plus in this movie was its visual effects. A landmark in Indian Cinema, true, but only for that reason. Sadly, effects alone don't make a good movie.

Ra. One as a movie isn't actually that bad. It is good and enjoyable, but only for kids.

I give it a 5.5/10. One time watch, just for its cool effects.

Note: For those who still haven't watched it, no use watching in 3D, it won't add to your experience since none of the scenes are 3D worthy.

@raj_imdb
thanx for ur views, and i did post this also in the review section...but as u mentioned i would like to hear other peoples opinion on my review.....
unlike most others who just attacked the movie without much of a reason,i liked the way u presented it...

i still think SRK is really acting good...his G.One act was good but not great, but as i said at the initial stages he's just a one -dimensional character...Subramanium was excellent ...the scene where he tells ra.one that he is lucifer was really emotional..If it wasnt for SRK this movie would have lost itself...it needed someone to anchor the whole show and SRK did a fabulous role...

Comedy too i agree partially with you...too many adult jokes...but if u just care to ignore it,ull possibly enjoy it...

Music was excellent..no doubt..be it chammak or raftarein ,vishal-shekhar have done a great job...

director was a mistake...i feared that even b4 the movie released,if anubhav was the right choice, considering his past records...but he certainly did a much much better job...

MY UNBIASED REVIEW OF RA.One

First things first, let me tell you i am not a fan of SRK. I believe he has done some good movies , my favorite being swades and kabhi haan kabhi na.

I shall rate the movie on your parameters.

Acting-2.5/5 ( i thought the kid was okay, rampal had almost no scope to act but was convincing nonetheless, kareena kapoor was basically eye candy, the guy who played akashi was pretty good ( sad he didnt have a longer role), the other girl was plain annoying and finally SRK offered almost nothing new with the portrayal of any of his characters and i believe overacted quite a bit(formulaic portrayals).

Story-1.5/5 ( story was laden with plot holes and just shoved into the our face without providing any connections between how this was possible ( i am talking about ra.one evolving and coming out of the game). second half of the story was mostly [spoilers] T2 with very little importance given to the villain until the final battle[/spoiler].

Action-3/5
Action of this movie revolved around this new found technology of slowing down the movie to pan around and show a kick from a 3d perspective. This happened so many times that it became really distracting to me. There was hardly any hand to hand combat but most of this movie was basically explosions and scenic views which was done well.

Comedy-1/5
i didn't like the comedy 1 bit, it was perverse not childish, overdone in so many movies (basically involved around " make character act stupid, and have few laughs", there were maybe a few jokes decently done and unique, one that comes to mind is the mugging scene. That was original and funny.

Visual Effects-3.5 to 5+/5
this depends on what platform u compare it to. for Indian standards it was surpassing anything shown till date. for foreign standards it was not bad by any means and was great for most part of it, they had issues like trying to make SRK look younger. It was not the same look all the time, kept changing. But it was a solid effort with a very nice result in the end.

Music Picturisation-4/5 (i would like to add that music is more than a few songs thrown here and there and an important part of it is to set the mood as background to which i believe there was nothing new offered, but complemented most of the movie)
Cameos
Priyanka ---1.5/5
Sanjay Dutt ---4/5 ( i thought he was funny)
Rajinikanth ---?/5 ( i havnt watched Robot so i had no idea wat was going on )

Direction-1/5
This guy really does not know how to make a coherent movie. the story establishing was done and finished in the first 20mins after that it should have been the director taking control, and its sad to say he didnt.

Since this is kinda first draft to these kinda movies, it was okay only problem was no one decided to add any extra effort or perspective to their job bar the visual team, and i hope this does well so that one day we get a really good movie with nice special effects and/or superhero movie(maybe not in the line of the recent batman movie but surely some thing solid like x2 or xmen first class).

RA.One---5/10

@kushagra
great to know ur views, even though i dont agree to them, they are your views and u have personal reasons behind each one.....
but the part about ra.one coming out of the game is explainable based on the technology the movie introduces to us in the first place...
how did it evolve? sci-fiction movies can have lots of holes if we probe it with a spear, from terminator all the way to inception..the game just became 'self aware' ..

reply

see here was the concept

1- develop bad guy
2 - bring him 2 life through some technology

now the thing becomes extremely complicated from here on out. the way the editing was done to close these 2 points was really bad. there is a difference between giving a decent explanation albeit with a few plot holes that can be found if one probes in and secondly not having any link between the two. So what i am saying is lets take inception, now nobody knows the details of the serum used in inception but a convincing explanation was provided, which is what was required in this movie. I was not looking for how they built the technology that brings holograms to life, i buy that, my problem is that they developed a point but left it high and dry.
another issue which was glaring was with the HART. If someone builds a suit and puts it for display they are just gonna put some lights in it to make it look pretty, not actually build the technology that amps it especially for a game. But apparently some piece of plastic and lights becomes the key.

What im trying to say is that this movie was a lot of lights and no heart. No one except the marketing team/ visual team felt like they cared about putting some actual work in it. Just try and strip the visual away and treat the movie on skeletal parts , ie, Direction / Editing / Screenplay / Story / Acting / Background Score / Originality.

reply

@kushagra

i agree with u on the editing part...the concept of how the characters could have come out is done too quickly and a couple more scenes should have been added...

now the suit part.....if u had noticed in the developing scenes of the game, the only part of the suit that had a direct link with the game was the handgear...akashi injures his hand in one scene, when ra one tests his ability to connect with the real world...
we later see the handgear glowing with small red pixels, meaning ra.one had managed to transfer some parts of himself from the game to reality...

the body of ra.one is destroyed many times during the movie, but he always returns to his original form that is the red suit...so,

1-the suit that was displayed was just a prototype, and ra.one's synchronizing message that popped on screen was ra.one's input into the game[remember how he managed to become self aware] to show that he was filling the suit showed in the display... later on he could easily dispose of the original prototype suit and form an original suit once he is in reality...

[FYI-some high tech gameing companies do create such kinds of suits, just for public display, ofcourse]

the HART is like the handgear, its something that directly connects with the game...more of like a save folder...in reality that Hart is useless,it doesnt have any kind of extra powers...its useful only to the VDO characters, since these characters are built in such a way that they have to depend on the blue/red shiny conical thing

the originality, and background score is top notch...acting completely is carried off by SRK and the kid...the rest are just above avg...

i wont be able to ever convince you to like the movie...it completely depends on the viewers point of view...how u take in what is showed, would the viewer be able to fill the gaps,or should it be hand fed to them...inception is the master of such filling the gaps,it has the answers, but the director wants u to connect the dots...maybe anubhav tried to leave some [or lots] gaps for the viewers to fill up

Right there with you. I loved all the songs, they meshed right in with the film and carried the story well. I loved the airport checking scene, it was hilarious and unexpected. The airport arrival fight scene, however, was the one drag in the film, it could have been shorter - Chitti's arrival was right on time. Train scene and car chase through London streets were good too.
They could have focused more on Shekar's family life/personality in the beginning of the film.
You're right, might as well ignore Hollywood/Bollywood comparisons. How many avid
Bollywood fans watch Hollywood movies anyway? Your average Ra One viewer will leave the theater realizing that a masterpiece of Indian Cinema has just been made.

Every reviewer claims his reviews are unbiased. Anyways, you are too lenient of a reviewer since you claim no bias. The movie is just an entertainer and it does an okay job at it, the movie lacks originality whatsoever and that weights in a lot for me while reviewing.

Anyways, you have 3/5 and 3.5/5 for most of the sections you rated, how come the overall rating is 8/10? That is where I think the bias steps in even if you do not want to admit it. Should it be not like 6.5-7/10 based on those ratings?

reply

yes, sure based on each category if u avg it and do all sort of calculations the end result should come at a max of 7,but the +1 is for the effort to have brought something new to Indian Cinema

8/10? Bollywood and all its products are a big pile of horsepoo. Satyajit Ray is the only good that that happened to Indian cinema. Now go educate yourself enough to make a proper judgement about a movie.

reply

@inaptjuven

satyajit ray indeed has contributed much to Indian Cinema, but saying hes the only good thing that has ever happened to indian cinema is wrong and insulting to the talents like Amitabh,AR Rahman,SRK,Aamir,Mohanlal,Mammootty,Rajnikanth,Rajesh Khanna and many many other talented people... [above names not in any particular order].....

Dude,

I like your review..all you just said is true.

Ra.One is the biggest film ever made in the whole universe! I just love the story and direction.

I believed that Chris Nolan is putting up a cameo of RaOne in the TDK Rises and Peter Jackson just signed in for a directorial of Ra.Two. Also, i read in a tabloid that Kim Jon Il died of a heart attack after seeing Shekhar blasted by Ra.One.

Thank you so much for the review and I expect your reply soon (as usual, you want your thread to grow - typical SRK marketing method).

why do people uphOLd THE devil when they know the definition of itself?
