My Impression of the Film

First off, I just wanted to share my general impression of the movie. Second, I am a fundamentalist Christian and I am not 'delusional' just because of my religious beliefs.

Now, those two items are disposed of, so what about the film itself? The acting from such people as Lee Majors, Stacy Keach, and Anna Zielinski, was pretty good, I thought. Most of the rest of the cast were adequate. So the acting while it ranged from fair, to pretty good, will not win an Academy Award. By the same token, it won't win a Razzie, either.

The technical aspects, the filming, the behind-the-scenes stuff, was done pretty well, too.

The film does have a weak spot, however, and that is the script. Not necessarily the plot; that was adequate, and was based on many (but by no means, all) Christian interpretations of what will happen in the final days of human history. So, some Christians will take issue with the events of the ends times as presented here. Another problem that I saw with it it was that some of the subplots seemed contrived. The husband who broke into the house across the street is an example. He had been resisting becoming a Christian before, and then conveniently just before the Rapture, he makes up his mind and takes the plunge, so to speak. Just in the nick of time, it would seem. The two FBI agents after seeing everyone has disappeared, suddenly realizing that the Christians were right all along. I predict that that might happen with some people, but the majority will still think that something else explains the vanishing.

Was the purpose of the film to evangelize or to entertain? Or both? If the primary function was to entertain, it came across as extremely preachy. On the other hand, if evengelization was a major goal, then I can see it. The problem with the film is that it can't quite seem to make up its' mind what it wants to do. And while the film certainly promoted a particular point of view, I did not see it as racist, as some here seem to..

Overall, I give this film a B-. It was a good film, but it was not perfect.

I just finished watching it again and thoroughly enjoyable and well balanced between entertaining and evangelizing. I am a fundamentalist Christian also and think it was one of the best movies of this genre. I am curious about the ending if it was left open for a sequel. I hope so. Bravo!
