The man who was in the trunk first was apparently the actual owner of the house--Mara recognizes him in the family photos that the psycho-siblings have wisely removed from upstairs.
The brother was in the sheriff's vehicle, presumably, because of the search for Mara. That was a bit implausible. (What good would it do for him to be sitting out in the car while the sheriff knocked on doors?)
I believe the sheriff did say how long she'd been gone, but I don't recall what he said--I think it was a matter of hours. (Maybe 48?)
