I'm not sure whether I missed something obvious or whether this film actually made no sense, but how did Jon and his "wife" get hold of Mara's brother? Did they know it was her brother? Is so, how? And how did he end up there?
shareRemember when Jon asks the sheriff if he and his deputy wants to come inside for a cup of coffee, and the sheriff says something like "that's not my deputy". Well that was Mara's brother who was with the sheriff.
And no, they probably didn't know he was her brother until she told them.
It's not "probably" it's "definitely". When they force Mara to have sex with her brother she asks Lea "Who is he ?" and Lea answers "I don't know". It's only when Lea uncovers his face that Mara recognizes her brother.
shareDid I miss something about who was in the trunk? The brother is in the trunk eventually. Who was there before? And how long was Mara supposed to have been gone? Why was the brother with the sheriff? I admit that I did some fast-forwarding because this was SO bad, but when I found myself confused, I backed the thing up . . . and remained confused.
shareThe man who was in the trunk first was apparently the actual owner of the house--Mara recognizes him in the family photos that the psycho-siblings have wisely removed from upstairs.
The brother was in the sheriff's vehicle, presumably, because of the search for Mara. That was a bit implausible. (What good would it do for him to be sitting out in the car while the sheriff knocked on doors?)
I believe the sheriff did say how long she'd been gone, but I don't recall what he said--I think it was a matter of hours. (Maybe 48?)
