Does anyone know the name of the actress playing John's mother in 'Neds'? I couldn't find out with the credits (there is no 'Mrs. McGill')...

For some reason IMDB doesn't list it here but John's mother was played by Glasgow's own Louise Goodall. If you liked Neds, I can strongly recommend Ken Loach's film "My Name Is Joe", where Peter Mullan (writer-director of Neds/John's dad in the film) plays a recovering alcoholic looking to start afresh and Louise Goodall co-stars as his love interest. Their relationship is actually one of the more uplifting parts of that film!
