What the hell happened to Val Kilmer ...?

He used to be in some great movies.

reply

He got old, fat and less critical in his choice of roles.

I came to this very board to post the very same thing. What the fck happened to Val Kilmer? "Macgruber" then this *beep* "Gun"? Mr. Kilmer: Wake up man... wake up please.

reply

To the OP - Val Kilmner has simply passed his peak.

While not an industry insider, I can only imagine that his reputation for being difficult on set and an addiction to a steady paycheck are probably the two biggest factors in his decision to seek refuge in the straight-to-DVD-dungeon.

He is (emphasis on is) a very capable actor - sometimes even inspired. Films like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Deja Vu and Spartan prove that.

hei he has bills to pay like everybody else, and he aint swiming in roles! its not like hes getting younger too, take the job and move on, maybe we will see something good of him in upcoming years.

reply

I've got the same question. He got old, he got fat but so did may good actors who keep getting good parts.

reply

He was in some great films. I'm still a big fan of his though. I heard that as his success grew he became very difficult to work with and it sounds like he got a big head. He would be a jerk and treat people poorly. Like I said that's what I heard. Plus, at the tail end of the 90's he had a few box office bombs which can kill your career pretty quickly. They said the same thing about Mickey Rourke that he was difficult and Hollywood has welcomed him back giving him big movie roles again. Hopefully the same thing will to Val Kilmer, because his last really good performance was in the low budget film "Felon" (2008).

reply

Ooh, that's a good point, I almost forgot about that film.

"Felon" was actually really good.

reply

He was great in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Wonderland, but in the last 5 years:
nothing. He was wretched and almost unrecognizable in MacGruber.

His face has swelled into a huge melon head a la Ted Kennedy.
You only get that red melon face through huge amounts of illiberal
drinking and eating and unprotected sex.

What is "illiberal drinking?" I have had unprotected sex for the last 55 years and I don't have a red melon face.

Help stamp out and do away with superfluous redundancy

He's supposedly difficult to work with, plus he owes the IRS so he's probably willing to take whatever piece of *beep* movies he can complete in a month and make more than most people on this board makes in 5 years.

But he was never really a huge blockbuster draw. I'm sure if he lost weight he could get back in the game if he wanted to.

Val kilmer is going through the same thing as wesley snipes, steven segal, jean claude, and cuba gooding. They were super hot in the peak of their career, so they kept getting tons of movies thrown their way. Problem is, they tried to do all of them instead of turning some of them down and ended up making critically and fan panned films. As a result, fans stop watching and studios stop casting them. I surprise Eddie Murphy has lasted this long, because it seemed like he was going down this same road.

yet again, imdb posters are called out..why, rather pointless wouldnt you say as there is no correlation between our income and val Kilmer's non-existent career

reply

Eddie Murphy lucked out with Shrek - 4 films plus 5 spin-offs. He finally figured out that you can make a lot of money making kids films if they're successful. Every other movie he's made hasn't had the same success except Dreamgirls.

reply

Just before I watch this movie, I saw Tombstone for the first time in like 12 years. Than I watch Gun.

Wow, how time really does kill a man slowly.

reply

If John Travolta & Mickey Rourke have taught us anything, all it takes is one great performance in a great film. Kilmer's still got it.
