It's Alright
Depends on what you're looking for. This was consistently advertised as a visual album, so I will address that first. If i treat it like an album, there may be three or four tracks you could actually listen to. The rest is going to be feedback an noise. In true Animal Collective fashion, this isn't unusual, but it is disappointing. Where visuals could make you feel so much more attached to the music, the music isn't always there. There was one part where I felt like I was watching the "Falcon Jab" video by Ratatat, but instead of music there was just a bunch of static and *beep* 55 minutes of video and an estimated 15 minutes of quality audio is just not enough to qualify as a visual album in my opinion.
As for the visuals. Stunning at times. Overused at others. Nonsense and droning at extremes. Some visuals I found completely beautiful. It was these instances that were inspiring. I actually found many of these to be during times that the audio was on one of it's tangents. It's cool looking stuff. I did not get a story line, did not think the visuals had any depth, and was instantly wanting more during the (sorry I am about to use all caps. i swear i never do this) 8 MINUTE!!! static kaleidoscope portion. I may be the only person who thought the breakdown in "Brother Sport" was excessive, but I doubt that I will have a find anyone who will argue the redeeming qualities of this footage. It is like an intermission at best. Watch this film, but allow yourself the remote, make sure its dark, have a good stereo, and by all means be under the influence of something. I imagine this will play in the background of many art shows in the future
