Why is this film great?

Why is PT Anderson great? Fanboys keep jerking off to him but I never hear any argument as to why he is "great" or this film is "great".

reply

Well, it's very subjective.
I personally just enjoy the vibe--the atmosphere--of PT Anderson films. I've dug his stuff since I saw There Will Be Blood. I was seventeen then. And I don't really recommend his films to my friends and fam, I just hope they discover him on their own. Most of them know about Boogie Nights (which I also love) but that's it.
For me, his films are like visual novels. They give you a lot to think about as well as well-calculated imagery.

reply

I'd agree with using There Will Be Blood as an example. Much as I enjoy his other movies, that one really stands out.

reply

what's the oldest film you've ever seen?

reply

Honestly, the oldest film that I have a great recollection of is probably 2001: A space oddity (haha).
Then Taxi Driver. But then again, I also love the first two Godfather films.
Dr. Strangelove, but I haven't watched that in a while.
Hitchcock's Psycho (also haven't watched in a while)
The original Planet of the Apes.
Goldfinger (rewatched that the other day with my father)
Anyway, why do you ask?

reply

It explains everything. You don't know shit.

reply

That is possible.
What exactly is it that you believe I don't know?

reply

everything. You can't possibly asses modern films unless you have seen silent films and golden age films aplenty.

reply

I am not a scholar. I just watch what I can, and I enjoy what I enjoy.

You ask why other people think the film is 'great'. Well, why do you dislike the film?

reply

then don't come in here saying this is a great film because you don't know shit.

reply

Come on.
I'm allowed to say it's great, just like you are allowed to say that it's shit.
These are just opinions.
It's okay either way.

Also, you haven't given one reason for why you don't like it...so...?

reply

because it's unremarkable.

reply

my lord you boys need to chill out even though you were here five years ago, lol.

reply

That doesn't explain everything. He saw an adult film and liked it, saw the work of the director and has an opinion that this his work is elevated above other directors.

I dont see why watching a few silent movies or seeing the oldest film still in print would change that opinion. Ive seen loads of silent films, black and whites like Battleship Potemkin, Metropolis, Nosferatu, Frankenstein, City Lights, A Trip to the Moon, people dancing in a garden in 1888 etc etc

Films from a wide range of directors like Ingmar Bergman, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Scorsese, David Lynch, Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman, Kubrick, Speilberg, Billy Wilder, John Ford, John Huston.

And a lot of very average or trash films all the way through till today.

It doesnt take a film history professor to appreciate the works of a director like PT Anderson or even Denis Villeneuve. By today's standards and past standards they are are working on that elevated level compared to the majority of their contemporaries and to the levels of the directors i named above.

They are still not finished and hopefully can be named alongside the likes of Kubrick, Scorsese etc

Maybe PT Anderson should try and go a more mainstream route and make a gangster film instead of doing character studies about dress makers, con artists and thugs. AT least he hasnt been lured by the mainstream and making his own art instead of what appeals to the bean counters in Hollywood.

If he only did that one gangster film then maybe the general public could get on board easier.

I have never disagreed with a post more.

How do you think it's great? I myself was letdown.

reply

I liked both Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood but couldn't really get into this. Aside from the great acting and cinematography, which is like a staple for PT Anderson films, I was fairly bored by it. Boogie Nights was full of entertaining scenes and subject matter, and There Will Be Blood had a powerhouse central performance from DDL who was fun to watch as a villain. The Master on the other hand didn't have enough about it to make it memorable for me.
