Expected this to be sucessful overseas

Not because I liked it, actually I thought it was overrated. But it's only the most succesful homegrown film at the NZ box office and has been widely acclaimed. Whale rider and Once were warriors had overseas sucess, and even the earlier effort from the same director (Eagle vs Shark, which I hated btw) was released overseas so it seems strange to me that Boy hasn't made it past New Zealand and Australia.

Well unlike Boy, Whale Rider depicted a stereotype of the 'frozen in time' Indigenous that overseas audiences were interested in. Not to mentions Boy's full of local humour that doesn't translate well.

Well, in 2016, it is on the internet, along with dozens of other NZ movies.
Mixed blessing, I would say but it get exposure.

This film is not only over-rated, but it has too much local colour and language - i.e. vulgar and stupid. It would not do well overseas.
