Cake Smashing

Could someone please explain why so many of the couples smash cake in each other's faces. I don't get it...

It's tradition for the bride and groom after they cut the cake to serve each other a slice. They feed each other a little piece, and sometimes cutely smear some on icing on the nose or mouth.

Sometimes though couples take it too far and smash the cake in each other's faces. Most people do not like this and brides usually put their foot down on it as it ruins the hours and hundreds of dollars spent on their make up and hair.

I understand about the bride and groom feeding each other cake but who decided smearing cake was cute?

It's seen as playful, like food fights for adults. Just a little joke. I know I would laugh if my fiance did it to me, but draw the line at him actually pounding an entire cake slice into my face.

My father put his foot down about cake-smashing. He said "it starts your marriage off with a fight; besides, it's stupid". Even though I was 38 and my fiancé 35 when we got married, we agreed it was a little childish and didn't do it. We fed each other small pieces and I believe we even used forks to do it.

Gosh yes, I don't know how cake-smashing got so widespread, or why so many people think it is so much fun.

At my wedding (small) we cut the cake, and people were encouraging us to smash it. Just to shut everyone up, we put a dab of frosting on each other's noses, me & my new hub.

Gee Woodle, Space Kadoodle!

I think it's very disrespectful. I'd love to know the cake smash divorce rate versus the cake feeding divorce rate.
